Woodlawn Without Walls
This is Us: We Are Thankful
We are nearing the end of the book of Ephesians, and this week, our short reading from Ephesians 5 suggests that gratitude and thankfulness are appropriate expressions of the Christian faith, at all times, for all things.
We usually celebrate Thanksgiving in the fall, when trees are dropping their colorful leaves, and fall harvests have been complete.  Thanksgiving is a holiday of over-indulgence, rich food, and football.  But if we are to give thanks at all times, in all things, then it’s appropriate to find reasons to be thankful when the thermometer is blowing its top!  Thanksgiving over the BBQ grill. Playing cornhole instead of eating creamed corn.  Thanksgiving at the ball park instead of the football stadium.
This Sunday we’ll consider Thanksgiving as a year-round attitude instead of just a fall holiday. This is Us. We are God’s people. We are thankful!
Until Sunday,

Patton Aguilars Welcome New Son
Danny Borego Patton Aguilar was born to John and Pastor Lori Patton Aguilar on Saturday, August 7, 2021.  We rejoice with Pastor Lori and John as they welcome Danny home.  Pastor Lori is now on Family Leave, and expects to return to her ministry at Woodlawn on November 1.  Lori’s column in our newsletter will return in November. For pastoral care, or assistance with Adult Education or Ministry groups, please contact the church office or Pastor Lance Carrithers.

What a whirlwind this summer has been.  It was so wonderful to return to many of the things that makes summer special and to connect with many of our youth at a variety of fun events.  This week marked our last youth event for the summer, so I wanted to share a few highlights with you!
As with most summers, our time at Camp Horizon was the greatest highlight.  While we were there for a shorter period of time this summer (just one day), it was a day filled with joy and faith formation as we encountered God in the reminder to take some time to rest and rejuvenate our souls in the beauty of God’s creation.

The week that we spent doing missions “in our own backyard” was also a true blessing.  We teamed with other UMCs throughout Wichita to provide hundreds of hours of service to our local communities.  Our group painted, cleaned, served in a food pantry, and helped sort at the Sedgwick County Child Advocacy Center.  This week was an incredible opportunity for our youth to put their faith into action by being the heart, hands, and feet of Christ.
Throughout the summer we also had a number of fun events – swim parties, outdoor movie nights, a trip to Chicken N Pickle, a visit to Rock River Rapids, disc golf, and a trip to Worlds of Fun.  It is always such a joy to spend time having fun with our youth and building relationships with them.
As we prepare for our fall programming, we look forward to reconnecting with those youth that we missed through the summer and finding ways to continue to create joy in the midst of the struggles of daily life.

A Word from Our Children's Director
Fall programming is about to begin and we need your help! If you have ever considered volunteering with kids, I would love to chat with you. Once or twice a month and a love for kids are all that is required! I am needing help on Sundays morning and Wednesday evenings. Please send me an email or call the church office if you are interested or have any questions.

Moment for Mission
The Pando Initiative serves Derby, Haysville, and Wichita, and has dedicated staff at six Derby schools (Cooper Elementary, Oaklawn Elementary, Pleasantview Elementary, Derby Middle School, Derby North Middle School and Derby High School).  Pando staff work side-by-side with the school staff to take away barriers to learning.   Assistance might range from providing an alarm clock to help a student get to school on time, to providing clothing, to arranging mental health support services.  Pando advocates assist the student with any and all tasks needed to successfully access education and serve as a stable influence in an often chaotic life.  The ultimate goal is to help students thrive.  Last year, 6-12th PandoKids showed an attendance increase of 89%, K-5th PandoKids showed an improvement in attendance of 94%, and the percentage of 9-12th grade Pando students who remained in school was 100%!
As a non-profit organization, Pando is funded by community organizations, grants, and donations, and relies on the generosity of donors to help students.  Your support is greatly appreciated!
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or

Staff News
Jenna Roskilly will be leaving her position of Director of Children’s Ministry at Woodlawn UMC effective August 19.  She has accepted a new position with Koch Industries in Wichita.
In 2015, Jenna first filled the position of part-time data specialist at Woodlawn and volunteered with children’s ministry.  She was selected from among several candidates for the Woodlawn Children’s Ministry Director in June of 2019.  Since then she has overseen our program for children including these past 17 months which has required creativity and flexibility during the pandemic.
On behalf of Woodlawn, I want to express our sincere appreciation for Jenna’s ministry among and with us, and wish her all the best in her new endeavors.

Stephen Ministry Training Class Final Call
Okay Woodlawn, it is our final week!
Stephen Ministry classmates we still seek!
Is the Holy Spirit telling you “Yes”?
Are you pushing and shoving away His request?
Is it the tools that you think you lack?
God gave you those a long time back.
A beating heart with compassionate love,
Two listening ears, answered prayers from God above.
Open your mind to training and see,
It is time well spent, learning is FREE.
These lessons you learn, you’ll use evermore
The hours fly by, open God’s door.
God is with you every step of the way,
Stephen Ministry only works when we pray.
We pray for God’s presence to begin our night;
Then pray as we leave that we shine His light.
In the foyer, your application awaits,
September 14, we open class gates.
We do, however, need time to prepare.
Complete it, return it, details we’ll share.
Please don’t ignore God’s call to make this complete;
Stephen Ministry trained, become Jesus’s heart, hands and feet.
As God’s child, we are called to serve!
Don’t allow Satan to steal your nerve!

You Are Part of a Caring Congregation!

In case you missed the news on Sunday, Lori and John Patton Aguilar welcomed their new son, Danny Borego Patton Aguilar, into their family on August 7 in the wee hours of the morning (2:56 am to be exact).  Mom, Dad and baby are doing well.  Congratulations on the new addition to the Patton Aguilar and Woodlawn family.

Please continue prayers for Lois DeWitt’s daughter’s partner, Barton. He is having musculoskeletal pain from a badly strained muscle and is a separate issue than the internal issues he is having. Your prayers are so appreciated.
Rachel & Shawn Bise ask prayers for Shawn's uncle, Mike Meyer, who went to the hospital last week for low oxygen and low blood sugar. He tested positive for COVID and had to be flown to Denver for a hospital bed and ventilator. He is older and has many underlying health conditions so a lot of prayers are needed.
Please continue to pray for Helen Fry.  She is currently at Brookdale and is in need of prayers of support.
Rachel Bise asks prayers for her brother-in-law, Len Sapp, who tested positive for Covid. Please keep their family in your prayers.
Wilma Burgess asks your prayers for their daughter, Michelle Burgess. She is at the hospital ER as medications treating several symptoms are not helping and she has become severally dehydrated as well as having a lot of pain in her hip. Please lift prayers for healing and for the doctors to be able to quickly diagnose her condition.
Linda King asks prayers for her nephew, Kenneth Warren, who lives close to Houston, TX. Kenneth had open heart surgery Wednesday, August 11, with 5 by-passes and the veins on both sides of his neck cleaned. Please lift prayers for a successful surgery and for healing.
Marge Eckles had surgery to remove her left thyroid this past Tuesday morning.  She was able to go home Wednesday, August 11. All tests came back good, no signs of cancer.  She thanks all of Woodlawn for the prayers of support and healing.
Please pray for the students, teachers and staff as school resumes this week.

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to or call the church office at 788-1507.
