Woodlawn Without Walls

This is Us: We are Equipped
We’ve been working through Ephesians for the past 6 weeks and have discovered some great themes: This is Us: We are the adopted family of God—united, worthy, kind, and thankful.
We now arrive at the end, the part of Ephesians that just about everyone who is a Christian has some familiarity with: the whole armor of God.  Pastor Lori talked about this great passage in a series of VBS worship messages back in June.  But now we revisit this passage in the context of everything we’ve learned from Ephesians up to this point.  As we do, we won’t forget the underlying theme of this book from the beginning.  Those who follow Christ are one family, adopted by God.  Separation, division and hostility are all ended in Jesus Christ. The body is one. I hope you’ll join us.
Until Sunday,

Dr. Provost Saas Returns to Offer Pastoral Care
Rev. Dr. Phyllis Provost Saas will be returning in a pastoral care role at Woodlawn beginning next week, offering assistance during Pastor Lori’s Family Leave. Dr. Phyllis and Pastor Lance will be covering hospital and follow up calls until Pastor Lori’s return. We are so pleased to welcome Phyllis and her great gifts of compassion and care back to Woodlawn’s staff. Be sure to notify the church office if you or someone you know from our congregation is in need of a pastoral call.

Have you ever really thought about what it would look like to live like Christ?  Think about it…
Jesus stood up for the poor and oppressed.  He threw over the tables of the moneychangers.  He broke many of the rules set forth by the Pharisees.  Jesus did not sit idly by and watch as the religious leaders took their faith for granted.  He revolutionized the way that those around him viewed the Jewish faith and called his followers to transform their own lives to live as he did – as renegades.
As Jesus called his disciples, he asked them to leave their families and careers to follow him.  What make us think that he asks any less of us?  Are you ready to drop everything and follow Christ?
This is the core of the message that our youth will learn this year as we look at the theme, “Renegade Gospel”.  We will use pieces from Mike Slaughter’s book by the same name to come to know how we are called to be renegades and put our faith into action as Christ did.

Youth Director
Change. A word that can be exciting and yet so scary at the same time. It’s a word that means something is about to happen that is different, whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Change is what is about to happen in my life. Woodlawn has been my church home for over 10 years, and I have been privileged to be able to work here for the past 7 years. So it was a super tough decision to make when I was offered another job. After much time in discussion with my husband and praying, it was my choice to resign as the Children’s Ministry Director here at Woodlawn.
Please know how much I love you all! You and your kids are so special to me and will always have a place in my heart! In fact, I still plan to try and volunteer as much as possible! So I don’t see this as a goodbye at all. This is just God opening up a door for me that I have to walk through.
I also want to thank all my volunteers for their support these past two years. You made this job a joy!

Ott Tapped as Interim Children’s Director
Woodlawn is pleased to announce that Caitlin Ott has been selected to serve as Woodlawn’s Interim Children’s Ministry Director beginning immediately.
Caitlin and her family are longtime members of Woodlawn UMC where she has volunteered in many areas of children’s ministry.  As a candidate for ministry in the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church, Caitlin is well equipped to oversee Woodlawn’s program for Children’s Ministry until such time that a permanent director can be found.
Pastor Lance Carrithers stated that “Children’s ministry is a very important part of our mission here at Woodlawn, and it was essential to have someone in place quickly to ensure we were ready this fall for the startup of WOW on Wednesday evenings.”
Carrithers noted that many volunteers are still urgently needed for our Sunday morning and Wednesday evening ministry with children.  A table of all open positions can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.
Caitlin Ott is in her second year at Saint Paul School of Theology, and has most recently been volunteering to help with pastoral care at Woodlawn.
Urgent Need for Children’s Ministry
Children’s Ministry Volunteers are urgently needed for Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.  Woodlawn currently has 27 OPEN opportunities to volunteer on Wednesday evenings each month, and another 15 OPEN opportunities on Sunday mornings.
Please prayerfully consider how you might help Woodlawn shape children to be the heart, hands and feet of Jesus in the world.  If you are willing to serve in children’s ministry, or if you have questions, please contact Pastor Lance at 316-37-5506 or email right away.

Moment for Mission
The Derby Community Family Services (DCFS) provides food and utility assistance to families that live in the USD 260 School District.
From January to August the Derby food pantry has served 161 households (308 adults & 179 children) - 67% were 1st time clients.
Recorded donations: cash/checks - $10,556; food - 21,586 lbs.; (4,587lbs from WUMC blue tub).
In March the Derby School District had a very successful food drive and collected over 10,000 items. They had a goal of 10,000 items and exceeded their goal.
Since March, volunteers have logged in a total of over 400 hours.
Some changes that have been made this year:
1.  Clients can now get food once a month.
2.  A Saturday drive thru has been added on the 3rd Saturday of each month. People who live in the Derby School District can come between 10am &11:30am to pick up food (no appointment necessary). Volunteers pre-pack boxes and have food ready to be loaded into cars as people drive up. This process began in February 2021 and the past few times have had approximately 15 families come each time. Appointments are still taken for the first and last Tuesday of each month.
DCFS has a new software program that helps keep track of those served. It also keeps track of donations (food or financial). Check out the new web site at The donations received help buy extra items such as meat and eggs, plus any other items the pantry runs out of.
Thank you to everyone who has been a volunteer in the past or is currently volunteering. Volunteers are what make it possible to keep providing the much needed services of help with food and utilities. If you have an interest in being a volunteer, please leave your name and contact information at the church office.

Stephen Ministry Training Class Final Call
Okay Woodlawn, it is our final week!
Stephen Ministry classmates we still seek!
Is the Holy Spirit telling you “Yes”?
Are you pushing and shoving away His request?
Is it the tools that you think you lack?
God gave you those a long time back.
A beating heart with compassionate love,
Two listening ears, answered prayers from God above.
Open your mind to training and see,
It is time well spent, learning is FREE.
These lessons you learn, you’ll use evermore
The hours fly by, open God’s door.
God is with you every step of the way,
Stephen Ministry only works when we pray.
We pray for God’s presence to begin our night;
Then pray as we leave that we shine His light.
In the foyer, your application awaits,
September 14, we open class gates.
We do, however, need time to prepare.
Complete it, return it, details we’ll share.
Please don’t ignore God’s call to make this complete;
Stephen Ministry trained, become Jesus’s heart, hands and feet.
As God’s child, we are called to serve!
Don’t allow Satan to steal your nerve!

You Are Part of a Caring Congregation!
Our congregation cares, seeking to share God’s love with all people—and one way we express that care is by our commitment to Stephen Ministry.
