Woodlawn Without Walls
This Is US…We Are United

Tuesday I was able to join many of our Woodlawn youth and children at Camp Horizon.  It was an absolutely beautiful day, and seeing our kids once again enjoying God’s beautiful creation, having great fun, and learning about their faith at camp was such a blessing!
Last week we kicked off our new summer worship series, “This Is US,” based on the popular television drama of the same name. Through July and much of August, we’ll be reading the book of Ephesians in the New Testament, and discovering what this short epistle has to teach us about living as God’s own adopted family.

What does it mean to consider ourselves far more than just followers of a certain religion, practitioners of a certain faith? Family runs deeper than that…to say “you’re family” is one of the greatest compliments we could ever give to a friend. And yet, according to Ephesians, that’s exactly what God is saying to each of us. “You’re family.” Let that sink in.

My second message in this series is “We Are United.” Members of a family don’t always agree; sometimes they even fuss a little (or a lot!). They don’t always live in close proximity with one another, but there is always something that holds family together. The same is true of the Christian family…those adopted as God’s children through Jesus. We’ll also watch a clip or two from “This Is Us” to see how the Pearson family helps us understand these biblical themes.

I hope you’ll join us!  Until Sunday….

John and I want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the beautiful baby shower last Saturday! Thank you to those who helped plan and coordinate, for all those who attended and all the well wishes from those who could not attend. It was such a lovely time and we are so blessed to have our little one surrounded in such care here at Woodlawn. Thank you for your words of support as we excitedly wait to meet our little boy :)

“Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:30-31
This week we had a Woodlawn day at Camp Horizon.  It was a wonderful opportunity to be in a sacred space with kids and children of all ages from Woodlawn.  While there, we had plenty of opportunity for fun – water kickball, baseball in the pool, human foosball, ga-ga ball, mystery trails, and wagon rides were just a few activities that our children and youth had a chance to enjoy.

But, of course, it was not all just fun and games.  While there, we spent time learning from the book of Isaiah as we talked about the need that we have to rest and recharge – both physically and spiritually.  After all, the call to rest comes from the very beginning in the story of creation.  But I love the way that Isaiah talks about the opportunity to recharge our bodies – with God lifting us up with wings like eagles.  During our Bible Study time, this is precisely what we had the chance to do as we spent time in the new prayer garden at Horizon.  Our youth and children were encouraged to just spend time with God in prayer through a variety of activities such as a disagreement well, in which they picked up a stone to represent people that they were having disagreement with and then released it into the well to illustrate letting go of the conflict.

It truly was an amazing day and after our time of recharging, I encourage you to also take time to rest and recharge your own body, both physically and spiritually.

A Word from Our Children's Director
This week Bryce Fuhrmann and I got to spend the day at Camp Horizon with over 40 kids. It was a day filled with scavenger hunts, hikes, swimming, laughter, and getting closer to God. The staff at camp did an amazing job with the kids and youth! I know we all went home exhausted, but also filled with God’s love and spirit!
I also want to take a moment to thank all my parent volunteers that stayed to help with the elementary group and Club 45 group. Thank you Tammie Brooks, Erika Koch, Anne Lee, Janet Postier, and Rhonda Buttel!! I appreciate you all so much! Without your help, this day couldn’t have happened!
Blessings!

Moment for Mission
Open Door

United Methodist Open Door began in 1965 as United Methodist Urban Ministry of Wichita. One of the many services offered at Open Door is a noon meal at the Homeless Resource Center for the men and women in need. Volunteers from WUMC donate food and prepare and serve a meal on the 4th Thursday each month for approximately 130-150 guests.

Our monthly meal stays the same – macaroni and cheese, ham, salad, rolls, and cookies. To put the monthly quantities into perspective, we serve approximately 57 pounds of macaroni and cheese, 36 pounds of ham, 9 pounds of salad, 4 pounds of tomatoes, 144 rolls, and 312 cookies!

Today’s mission offering will be used to provide the meat and any additional items that are needed to complete the monthly meals.  We appreciate your support of this worthwhile mission, as do the guests that we serve each month.
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or

There is now another option to celebrate with your Woodlawn family on Sunday mornings: “Coffee’s on me!” You can cover the cost of coffee Sunday morning to honor or celebrate an occasion. Coffee costs about $35 per Sunday. Signup is also available in the office.

Brenda Thanel sent the following on behalf of Scout Troop and Cub Pack 683 - "It is with a heavy heart we announce the sudden death of Pack Den Leader and the Treasurer of our Troop - JoAnna Bergstresser. JoAnna, who was in her 40's, passed away from COVID. Her husband, who was also hospitalized with COVID, is slowly recovering.  JoAnna leaves 3 boys ages 11 to 16 and her husband Eric to grieve her loss. JoAnna never met a stranger and had a quick and easy smile for everyone. She believed in scouting and even went on some campouts with the Pack and Troop. She faithfully served both Pack and Troop 683 for approximately 5+ years. Currently the Pack and Troop is working to start a meal train as well as determining other means of assistance for Eric and the boys. With Eric recovering we know that they need assistance but space as well. If anyone would like to make a donation to the Bergstresser family, they can send a check made out to "Troop 683" and in the memo section label it Bergstresser. Donations should be mailed or dropped off to Woodlawn UMC, 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd, Derby KS 67037."

Bonnie Prideaux asks your prayers for her son, Mike, who returned home from an OKC hospital yesterday. Mike has a very bad lung infection and doctors have done all they can to treat it. Your prayers for healing are asked.

Marianne Scripp also asks your prayers for her son, Dennis, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease and has gone onto hospice care. Prayers of comfort and support are asked for Dennis and for Marianne and her family.

Ann Jeffries sent the following Thank You: “During the time of my daughter's unexpected death and my two surgeries, I received many cards, phone calls, flowers and plants, food and prayers.  All that helped me through this difficult time. I hope to soon be able to resume participation in the life of our church. Meanwhile, I am thankful for spiritual support.”
