Woodlawn Without Walls
For the past five years, many people have fallen in love with the Pearson family, and the television drama, “This is Us.”  The program follows not only the life of the present day Pearson family, but flashes back to moments in the family’s generational history.  The title sort of says it…”this is us”…warts and all.  The challenges and the celebrations. The drama and the laughter.  For better and for worse…through the generations…one to another.  This is us.
In the New Testament you will find the book of Ephesians, a letter circulated among the early Christian Church.  This letter, more than any other, is a glimpse into what it means to be part of a Christian community. Or, we might say, what it means to be part of a church family.  Ephesians is the Church’s “This is Us,” who we are with all our imperfections and difficulties, but also who we are as we celebrate and encourage one another as the body of Christ, seeking to live as the heart hands and feet of Christ in the world.

Beginning this Sunday and continuing through the first half of August, I will be offering a series of messages on Ephesians, titled, “This is Us.”  We begin in the first chapter of this little letter and will work through several major themes over the next six weeks.  Those familiar with the television series of the same name might enjoy the illustrations that pop up from time to time from the Pearson family.  I hope you’ll join us, and discover what Ephesians has to teach us about being part of the family of God.

Some things just don’t go as planned.  Last week, our youth had the opportunity to join with nearly 150 youth from United Methodist churches across the area to serve in a mission week in our own backyard – right here in the Wichita area.  Of course it was one of those weeks where nothing went as planned.  The goal was to paint the exterior of a house, build a wheelchair ramp, and do some yardwork.  Then it rained.  Every day.  So we had to scramble to find indoor options for these youth to serve their local communities.
While it wasn’t the work we had planned to do, our youth had a great time painting, tearing down VBS decorations, organizing storage rooms, packing snack-packs at a food pantry, and serving in the donation center at the Sedgwick County Child Advocacy Center.  In addition to our mission work, we gathered with all of the other youth at an opening worship, as well as a closing worship and cookout at the end of the week.

It was a wonderful opportunity to see the extent of needs right here in our own community and to be able to give of ourselves to benefit our neighbors.

To give you a glimpse of the week, here are a few pictures!

Moment for Mission
Good Samaritan Fund

The Good Samaritan Fund is one of the missions under Derby Community Family Services. Good Sam, as we call it, provides needed help with utilities for those who live in the Derby School District. We will help a family once a year. Until recently, we had a limit of $250 for each request. We have now been able to increase the amount to $400. The funds to make this possible come from several different sources: $700 monthly donation from the Thrift Shop; donations from this congregation & others in our community and a bequest left by Mary Withers, a sweet lady who was part of this congregation. We have had many more requests for utility assistance lately due to loss of jobs during COVID.

So far this year we have helped 72 families & paid out a total of over $17,000 - an average of $236 per family.

Thanks for your support and your help with this very important mission.

Food Pantry Needs
The DCFS Food Pantry would appreciate donations of the following items for the remainder of June and July: toilet paper, dish soap, laundry detergent, syrup, pudding, jello, sloppy joe sauce, canned chili and peanut butter.

Thank you for all your donations to the DCFS Food Pantry. We are blessed to be so well supported, allowing us to provide food and hygiene items to families in need in our community.

DCFS can always use volunteers. We could especially use someone to take calls on the DCFS cell phone to setup appointments for food and utility assistance. Right now we only have two volunteers to take calls and we normally have at least four.

A special thank you to all the volunteers who work at Woodlawn’s Thrift Shop and to anyone who has been or is a current volunteer for DCFS.

Thrift Shop News
The Woodlawn Thrift Shop is stocked for summer. They are open Thursday thru Saturday, 9am-2pm. They continue to accept gently used donations.

Thrift Shop will no longer require face masks for anyone who is fully vaccinated. They will continue to ask their customers to maintain a social distance. They thank their volunteers and customers for their support and patience over the past months.
