Whether you’re a new or experienced coach, there are plenty of options to develop your career. The opportunities available to coaches is growing quickly. From grassroots through to elite (including Paralympic) levels. Qualifications are now available to support coaches wishing to become involved in disability sport.

Did you know? 1 in 5 people in the UK have a registered disability so you could already be working with a disabled athlete and not know it.

Unsure if you want to get involved with disability sport or not? Just read our Q and A below to find out.

I have never done any coaching in disability sport before…

It can be quite daunting to coach something new. The Active Kids For All programme sponsored by Sainsbury’s and administered by the English Federation of Disability Sportprovides first step training to support you. This gives you an overview of working within disability sport and what your next steps could be.

I have done some coaching in disability sport. What is the next step?

The next step you could consider is joining a sports coach UK course, where you can improve your knowledge. Currently, there are two courses: Inclusive Coaching: Disability and Effective Communication: Coaching Deaf People in Sport. These are generic sport related courses and can be applied to any coaching sessions.

I want to coach in a specific sport, what options are there?

A large number of sports now offer disability courses alongside their main courses. Both football and athletics have developed disability specific courses to allow coaches to specialise if they wish. If you want to find out more, contact the National Governing Body Local Lead Officer.

Football Association (FA) have developed a few courses:

FA Coaching Disabled Footballers
FA Coaching Blind Footballers
FA Coaching Deaf Footballers

A few examples from athletics include:
Inclusive Coaching Guidance Documents (Ambulant and Wheelchair)
The UK Disability Inclusion Training – Athletics course
British Sign Language (BSL) videos

Badminton England currently offers the UK Coaching Certificate endorsed Level 1 Certificate in Coaching BadmintonLevel 2 Certificate in Coaching Badminton and Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Badminton these courses offer the how to skills for coaching as well as the technical and tactical elements of the game.

The Bisi Badminton Schools Education programme supports teachers and coaches working in primary and secondary schools.

Badminton England have been working to develop a training model to support the development of coaches, so that they can more effectively develop the players that they work with.

The Model for Elite player Development through Active Learning (MEDAL) was developed in response to coaches wanting to engage with professional development to raise the standards of coaching in England.

The MEDAL programme is a constantly developing suite of modules that are aimed at all levels of coaches, working with all types of players.

Build on your current coaching knowledge with the continued professional development workshops or take the next step in your coaching journey with a qualification in the sport you love. Some of the courses are listed below.  For a full list, register on London Sport Coaching and search the events section.
