Welcome to the Hunters Woods Blue Marlins!
We are looking forward to a great 2014 swim season! We have a full roster with 110 swimmers. There are several new families joining our team and we welcome all to the Blue Marlins!
Below is a LOT of important information. Please read all the way to the bottom!
Mandatory Meeting on Tuesday, May 27th
All parents should attend the mandatory Parent Meeting, which will be held at both 7:05 p.m. (for parents of 10-and-under swimmers) and 7:50 p.m. (for parents of 11-and-older swimmers) on the first night of practice. Also be sure to check out the answers to Frequently Asked Questions posted on the team website.
If you still have questions, please ask our team managers: Sumi Vintimilla, Barbara Byron, and Michele Jerome. The managers usually can be found at the managers’ table at the pool during practice times; you can also email them using the quick link to the right. All feedback is welcomed!
Our first evening practice will be Tuesday, May 27, from 7-7:45 p.m. for age 10 & under swimmers, and from 7:45-8:30 pm for age 11-and-older swimmers. Evening practices will continue at these times every weekday until the end of the school year, when morning practices will begin. Morning practice times will be every weekday from 8–8:45 am for 10 & under swimmers, and from 8:45–9:45 am for 11 & older swimmers. Practice will be cancelled for lightning; please call the pool if you are unsure; the number for Hunters Woods pool is (703) 391-2187.
RSTA regulations require that parents of 8 & under swimmers stay with their swimmers during practices. We encourage parents of 9 & 10 year-olds to be there also. If your child is new to swim team, then regardless of the age of your swimmer, parents are encouraged to stay for the first few practices to observe what happens during practice. Of course, all parents are welcome to stay during practices.
Other rules to keep in mind:
- No one is allowed in the jacuzzi during practices or meets.
- No one is allowed on the ramp or in the volleyball/basketball areas during practices or meets
The team managers are currently collecting a $10 fee per family. This family fee supplements our concession stand proceeds and goes to pay for team supplies, the pasta and end-of-season parties, spirit items, and other miscellaneous swim team expenses for the season. We ask that each family pay the family fee during practice time to a team manager by no later than May 31, 2014. Cash or checks made payable to Hunters Woods Swim team are accepted.
TWO Pasta Parties!
On Friday, June 6th and Friday, June 20th, there will be a special combined age group practice from 7-8 p.m. followed by our traditional team Pasta Party potluck dinner. Families with last names beginning A to C should bring an appetizer/side dish, last names beginning D to N should bring a pasta main dish, and O to Z should bring a dessert to share.
Volunteer Policy: Sign up now!
The only paid swim team positions are the coaches, so as a necessity ALL Blue Marlins families are required to volunteer to work at the meets. Specifically, every family must sign up for volunteer positions at a minimum of three (3) of our six (6) meets. Parents of swimmers who participate at the IM Meet and All Stars Meet will also be separately asked to sign up for a volunteer position at those meets, also.
We encourage parents to consider signing up for more than the minimum three (3) dual meet positions. These meets cannot be run successfully (or at all) without the help from many, many adult volunteers. Please use our online Meet Volunteer Signup, and sign up early to get the jobs you want! Thank you for supporting your Blue Marlins swimmers!
Absence Policy: Report in Advance!
Please be aware of our absence policy. If your swimmer is going to miss a meet for any reason, please let the coaches know by reporting the absence in advance using our online Meet Absence Signup. You should sign up for an absence no later than the Tuesday before the meet that your swimmer will miss. However, we encourage you to sign up now if you know that your swimmer will not be able to attend a meet. If you don’t find out until after the Tuesday before the meet that your swimmer will not be able to attend, please promptly notify the team managers either in person or via email.
Unreported absences can detrimentally affect the entire team’s score, because meet events are planned in advance by the coaches with the assumption that all swimmers will be present unless an absence has been reported by the Tuesday before the meet.
We strongly encourage all Blue Marlins swimmers to attend all six of the team’s regular dual meets this swim team season. A swim team can be at a significant disadvantage at a meet if a lot of its swimmers are absent, particularly if most of the other team’s swimmers are present. Each and every one of our swimmers – all ages and all abilities – is an integral and valued member of our team, and the regular attendance of all of our swimmers at each of the meets is important for our team’s success as a whole.
Team Suits & Spirit Wear
The team suit for the next two years (Summer 2014 and 2015) is Speedo Splatter Splash. The onsite fitting and sale is Thursday, May 29th from 6:30 - 7:40 pm. Cost for boy's jammers is $35.50 and girl's suits cost $55.
If you take pictures at one of the meets or practice and would like to share them with the rest of the team, you can upload them to our Shutterfly group photo site. If you need help accessing the site or posting pictures, please contact our team’s website administrator.
