Giving Tuesday -- a global day of giving -- is TOMORROW! It is also the deadline for our $75,000 Giving Tuesday Match.  A long-time and dedicated Rise member will match every donation to our annual appeal, up to $75,000, until midnight tomorrow. This is a great time to invest in women and girls and double your impact!
Many of you have already made your year-end gift, and we thank you for being an early donor!  If you have not yet made your annual appeal donation, please give before midnight tomorrow so that your gift will be matched.

A Special Thank You for Our Matching Gifts

Together Women Rise is fortunate to have such amazing supporters! As mentioned above, we have a wonderful donor (who prefers to be anonymous) who has provided up to $75,000 for our Giving Tuesday Match. We have several other members who have provided matching gifts to encourage others to donate to our annual appeal this year. Diane Gilboa (CO, Denver-5 chapter) offered to match donations of up to $2,000 during a three-day period earlier this month. We not only met that goal; we smashed it! Betsy Teutsch (PA, Philadelphia-5 chapter) is matching annual appeal gifts up to $5,000 in recognition of the 10th anniversaries of four Rise chapters in Philadelphia. And Karen Perlroth (CA, Portola Valley-1 chapter) is matching all annual appeal donations made by her chapter, up to $5,000.  Thank you so much Diane, Betsy, and Carolyn for helping to make our annual appeal a success!

Thank you also to the numerous members who set up Facebook fundraisers in recognition of Giving Tuesday, our annual appeal, or their birthdays! This not only raises funds for women and girls, it also introduces our mission to new people through social media.

Announcing Our New Transformation Partnerships:
Addressing the Root Causes of Global Gender Equality

More than a year ago -- as part of our strategic plan -- we established a committee of board, staff, and members of our volunteer Grant Selection Committee to research how to make the biggest impact on global gender equality, using current best practices in grant making.

Our Featured Grants will not change. We will continue to fund a monthly Featured Grant and provide a wide range of learning materials on the featured, country, issue, and project.

Starting in 2022, our Sustained Grants and Impact Partnerships will be replaced by new Transformation Partnerships. Transformation Partnerships will build on the successes and lessons from our Sustained and Impact Partnership Grants and will allow us to better address the root causes of global gender equality.

Please read the full announcement which also includes a link to FAQs

A Systems Change Approach in Action

Scott OsborneThis is the 2nd in a series of blogs by Scott Osborne, long-time member of our Grant Selection Committee.
Last month, we looked at systems change and why that is such a powerful way to achieve our long-term gender equality goals. Let’s look at some examples of what a systems change approach looks like.

Take Action to Address Global Malnutrition

Experts predict that pandemic-related disruptions to food and health systems could cause up to a 50 percent rise in global malnutrition, and wasting (too thin for height) is expected to be the single biggest driver of increased child deaths. That is why it is so important that we speak up for a coordinated strategy for nutrition assistance and set clear targets for reaching the most impoverished children and families. Learn more from Dr. Leslye Heilig, Chair of our Advocacy Group with RESULTS, and join our advocacy call to action on global malnutrition.

Together Women Rise Supports Gender Equality Bills in Congress

Together Women Rise and more than 70 other organizations (including several of our grantees) sent a letter to the US House Foreign Affairs Committee asking it to advance three, bi-partisan gender equality bills in Congress. These complementary, bi-partisan bills include the Keeping Girls in School Act (H.R. 4134), the Girls Leadership, Engagement, Agency and Development (Girls LEAD) Act (H.R. 1661), and the Safe from the Start Act (H.R. 571). The letter urged the Committee to ensure that the needs and perspectives of women and girls around the world are not overlooked in US foreign policy.

Our December Featured Project:
Sexual Reproductive Health Initiative in Rwanda

Rwanda is still recovering from the long-term effects of the 1994 genocide, which led to massive destabilization of the social and justice systems within the country. Social norms and negative stereotypes continue to limit the advancement of women and girls, especially in rural communities. Among the challenges that are shattering the dreams of adolescent girls is the rise of teen pregnancy and early marriage. This month, we are partnering with Komera to provide education on sexual reproductive health, access to family planning and resources, and advocacy work to change negative stereotypes that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Peggy Smith, long-time member and dedicated volunteer leader at Rise, on Nov 4. Peggy was a member of the DE, Newark-1 chapter and served as Co-Leader of our Mid-Atlantic region for a number of years. “Peggy was a remarkable person and advocate for women and girls around the world,” said Barb Collins, Together Women Rise Co-Founder. “She opened the door for Together Women Rise to partner with the Peace Corps changing lives beyond measure. Her legacy lives on.” See Peggy’s obituary here.
Lennie Herrman, member of the WA, Spokane Valley-1 chapter (otherwise known as the “Spokane Valley Risers”) shows off the table runner recognizing the chapter’s fifth anniversary. Congrats to chapter leaders Judy Bacon and Ellen Williams and all their members.
Congratulations to the CA, Sacramento-2 chapter, led by Charlotte Richmond and Nancy Nos, on two years together!
Thank you to the members of the CO, Cherry Creek-1 chapter for their steadfast support during the pandemic. This is the ninth Zoom meeting that the chapter has had, and look at that great attendance!  The chapter, led by Mary Griesedieck and Nancy Lieberman, is hoping to meet in person in January if conditions allow.
The PA, Philadelphia-5 chapter enjoyed crisp weather and roasting marshmallows over a fire for s’mores! Kudos to this chapter, led by Judith Tindall and Cara Herold, for their creative ways to keep their meetings fun and meaningful!
