Taco Bell Releases Statement on Antibiotics

Last month, fast-food restaurant chain, Taco Bell, announced it would stop using antibiotics important to human medicine in their chicken by the end of Q1, 2017. Taco Bell’s antibiotics-free pledge follows similar policies released by Subway, McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle and Panera who have all said they would cut back on, or in some cases, eliminate antibiotics. Read Taco Bell's statement here.

FDA Releases Final Antimicrobial Sales Rule

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week issued a final rule revising its reporting requirements for drug sponsors of all antimicrobials sold for use in food-producing animals by adding the requirement for sponsors to report species-specific sales estimates.   Read More >>

New PEW Charitable Trusts Report
A Scientific Roadmap for Antibiotic Discovery


Earlier this month PEW Charitable Trusts released its latest antibiotic resistance report entitled A Scientific Roadmap for Antibiotic Discovery. The report outlines a concrete approach to enable the discovery and development of new antibiotics and therapies over the coming decades. The report explains that antibiotic discovery has dropped precipitously over the past 30 years and that nearly all antibiotics brought to market since 1984, have been variations on existing drugs.

Antibiotics should be taxed to fund research into resistance, says Lord O’Neill

In a recent interview, Lord Jim O’Neill, Chair of the UK's AMR Review said the danger to human health from antibiotic resistance was “a much more troubling train wreck” than the financial crash of 2008. Lord O’Neill, a former Goldman Sachs chief and now UK minister, said there was an urgent need for industry leaders and consumers to “change mind sets” – and that a tax on antibiotics might even be one way to tackle the crisis.
