Marathon Petroleum's Illinois Refining Division Earns First
Regional Superintendent's CLASS Award

Regional Superintendent of Schools, Monte Newlin is pleased to announce that the Illinois Refining Division of Marathon Petroleum Corporation is the first recipient of the Regional Superintendent’s CLASS Awards Program.  CLASS (Community Leaders Assisting School Success) spotlights local business and community entities that have made a significant, positive contribution to the quality of education for the students of Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland Counties.  “The footprint made on students’ learning by the many contributions of Marathon, has been wide and deep,” said Newlin.  Over the past five years.  Marathon has donated over $53,000 to local schools.  Of that amount, over $44,000 has gone to the public schools of the five counties served by ROE #12.  Locally, close to $7,000 has gone to Lawrence County schools.  From technology improvements, to curriculum support, Marathon donations have made a real and lasting impact on student achievement.  Red Hill Superintendent Deana Brashear agreed.  “Marathon has contributed to our Accelerated Reader program…and to our math and science departments…for needed supplies such as calculators and lab equipment.”  Marathon Petroleum’s Illinois Refining Division consists of the Robinson Refinery, which was built in 1906 by the Lincoln Oil Company, and purchased by The Ohio Oil Company, Marathon’s predecessor, in 1924.  Marathon has an impressive record of safety and environmental stewardship, and community involvement both locally, and nationwide.

The Regional Board of School Trustees for Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland Counties conducted their Reorganizational Meeting at the Richland County Courthouse in Olney on Monday, May 18. The Board recognized  the many years of service of retiring Board Member, Ron Janes. After a review of the the results of the April 7th Consolidated General Election, re-elected trustees C. Kaye Holscher and Travis Farley were sworn-in and seated. The vacancy created by Janes’ retirement was filled by the Board with the appointment of Julia Michels of Noble. Michels’ appointment was necessary as no candidate filed to run for the open seat in the last election. She will represent Richland County on the Board until the April 2017 Consolidated General Election. Regional Board of School Trustees members each serve six year terms and at least one member from each county is required. The Regional Board is primarily responsible for hearing petitions for detachment of property from one school district and annexation to another. Regional Superintendent of Schools, Monte Newlin serves as the Ex-Officio Secretary of the Board. “The RBST is composed of a group of dedicated citizens who go about their duties without a lot of fanfare or notice,” said Newlin. “They always judge every petition on  what is in the best interest of the whole child and the school districts involved.” More information on the Regional Board can be found on the Regional Services page of the ROE #12 website at

THANK YOU, ALL for another great school year!  2014-15 witnessed some new challenges with PARCC testing and early PERA implementation, but you handled it with grace, dedication, and professionalism.  Next school year will bring it's own set of issues and opportunities, but I have no doubt but that you'll all continue to use them to make the schools of Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland counties among the best in the state!  Enjoy your summer, and take advantage of the warm weeks ahead to recharge and refocus.  Let's make 2015-16 the best school year EVER!
