Gifted Education Endorsement Opportunity

The Illinois State Board of Education is giving educators a short window of time to obtain an endorsement in Gifted by being "grandfathered in."  This window closes on February 1, 2015.  To obtain the Gifted Endorsement  under this provision, one must take this training and pass the Gifted Education Test which the State plans to release in early September.  The test will be based on the NAGC and IAGC Gifted Education Standards.  After February 1, 2015, those who wish to obtain the Gifted Education Endorsement must take 24 graduate credit hours in education AND pass the State test.

ROE #12 will be offering the Gifted Education Seminar at Nuttall Middle School in Robinson on October 27, November 17, and December 15, 5:00-7:00 pm.  Attendance at all three sessions is required.  Additionally, 45 clock hours of field work will also be required as part of the course. Cost for registration is $250.  Contact Sara Hemrich for more information.

Bus Safety Is No Accident!
ROE #12 reminds you that as school resumes, be sure to obey our bus laws. The majority of children injured or killed in public transportation accidents are not injured or killed on the school bus, but outside the school bus. Most are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. It might bother you to wait a few extra minutes for a school bus - but it could bother you for the rest of your life if you don't.
Sandi Thacker Retires

Longtime ROE #12 Lawrence County Office Manager Sandi Thacker retired on June 30th, and we wish her the best.  Her replacement is Lindsay Overton.  Lindsay has worked intermittently for the ROE over the past several years, and works for South Eastern Special Education as a teacher at Parkside Elementary School in Lawrenceville in the mornings.  Stop by and meet Lindsay during the afternoons, Monday through Friday at our office in the Lower Level of the Lawrence County Courthouse!
Fear Retires From Regional Board of School Trustees
Robert Fear, Newton recently retired from his position on the Regional Board of School Trustees, having represented Jasper County since the 1980s.  Fear’s replacement on the Board is Travis Farley of Newton.  Farley was seated at the meeting of the Regional Board on July 7th in Olney.  The Regional Board serves the citizens of Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland counties by hearing petitions for detachment and annexation of property from one school district to another.  A plaque commemorating his many years of service was recently presented by (L-R):  Corrie Ray, Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools, (Fear), Travis Farley, and Regional Superintendent of Schools Monte Newlin.

ROE #12 Staff Participate in United Way's "Day of Caring"
The United Way of Crawford County organized a "Day of Caring" on Tuesday, August 5th, for volunteers to aid in the preparations for the coming school year in the Crawford County schools.  ROE #12 ASSIST Program Director, Travis Titsworth (left) and Right Track Truancy Director, Brandon Gurley spent the day painting the gymnasium at Hutsonville Junior High, and doing landscaping at Nuttall Middle School in Robinson.  ROE #12 salutes these dedicated employees and all the many volunteers who took the time to make the schools and students in their community a priority!

West Richland Annexation Proceeds

The legal challenge brought against the West Richland CUSD #2 Board of Education and the Regional Board of School Trustees of Clay, Crawford, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland Counties was recently withdrawn, paving the way for the annexation of the District to East Richland CUSD #1 on July 1, 2014.  Officials from both districts worked hard to prepare for the new school year.  All junior high and high school students are attending at the facilities in Olney, while all grade school students’ parents have been given the option of having their students attend either elementary building in Olney or Noble.  The former West Richland Junior/Senior High School building in Noble is now owned by the Illinois Eastern Community College District #529.  I believe it is their intention to use it as a satellite campus for Olney Central College programs.  East Richland CUSD #1 officials report that the transition for students and staff has been smooth and that student needs have been paramount in the decisions made.

I hope your new school year is off to a GREAT start!  Please let us know how we can ever be of assistance to you.  Our staff stands ready to help! Thanks for all your efforts on behalf of our children!

Yours for Kids,

Monte Newlin
