ISBE Issues Report on Truancy Programs in Illinois
report just issued by the Illinois State Board of Education reviews data collected from the Student Information System (SIS) on IWAS from the FY14 (school year 2013-14, the most recent for which data is available) Truant Alternative/Optional Education (TAOEP) programs across the state of Illinois.  Some of the findings reflect very positively on ROEs in general, and on the ROE 12 ASSIST Program at Willow Hill specifically.
+ROEs served 73.7% of the total number of students enrolled as truants.
+Truant populations consisted of Truants (39.6%) and Chronic Truants (31.3%)
+ROEs served 60.8% of the total student population of the TAOEP Program
+ROE TAOEP programs operated at the lowest cost per student ($327/student)
+52.2% of program students were male.  47.8% were female.
+ROE 12's ASSIST Program in Willow Hill served 2.4% of the state's total TAOEP population (8th most in the state).
+ROE 12's ASSIST Program in Willow Hill witnessed a 73.4% success rate with that percentage of students improving their attendance.

School Survey Highlights Teacher Shortage
School officials from across the state of Illinois were surveyed at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.  The results indicate that more and more school districts around Illinois are finding it harder to fill teaching positions and find qualified candidates.  ROE 12 has been working to mitigate the effects of this shortage in our region through facilitating forums for local school officials and state legislators, and with state university representatives.  Read more here.
Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS) Update
Your input is needed!
The KIDS Survey is still scheduled for full implementation for the 2017-2018 school year; however, what will be required for state purposes is still being decided.  The following changes are being considered:
  • A reduction to 14 measures of school readiness that, based on the research literature, were determined to be most predictive of school success.  All domains and measures in the KIDS instrument will be available for local use.
  • All kindergarten students rated in the first 40 days of enrollment and data reported to the state through the KIDStech rating system to provide comparable data.  The second and third rating periods will be available for local use, but not required.
  • Local assessment systems, which continue to be determined by local districts, can offer evidence utilized to report psychometrically valid and reliable ratings in the KIDS rating system.
The complete KIDS tool, all the trainings, resources, regional coaches and the multiple reporting periods will continue to be available to districts at no cost.

Be sure that ISBE knows your thoughts on these changes.  Do they go too far?  Do they not go far enough?
