FROM THE PREZ

Hi there fellow Elmwoodites, here we are heading into the month of April and the staging of our first adult production for 2019 – Calendar Girls.  I’ve sat in on some of these rehearsals and man, it is looking very, very good. A stellar cast will ensure this is a highlight for the coming year.  We already have 3 sold out performances, so I do encourage you to book your seats sooner rather than later.

And just to keep us extra busy, auditions for Array ’19, our season of one act plays takes place next Saturday, 6 April.  The four plays will again be staged in a cabaret style setting, and include live singing, a Q&A session with the directors/actors, and our MC is The Breeze’s Hilary Muir.  Audition details elsewhere in this newsletter.

We were forced to change our October slot, The Father, when we learned this had been picked up by The Court.  It was a no brainer to pull the production, and replace it.  So in its place comes Be My Baby, a play of friendship, hope and survival – somewhat relevant in these difficult times.

Our 2020 programme is taking shape, and we should be in a position to announce this shortly.  A workshop was held with a number of fellow Elmwoodites taking part, spending a day working through the best part of 20 plays.  No easy task to whittle it down to three!

So that’s it from me, do take care and we look forward to seeing you at Calendar Girls, or maybe auditioning for Array ’19.

Cheers
Gaz

CALENDAR GIRLS
By Tim Firth / Dir. Susan Cameron
17 to 27 April (Licensed Venue)
When Annie's husband John dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an "alternative" calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Book: https://nz.patronbase.com/_ElmwoodPlayers/Productions

AUDITIONS: ARRAY ‘19
Saturday 6 April
We have the plays, the directors and the vocalists all locked in.  Now all we need is the actors. Book your time here: https://goo.gl/forms/ifiM2WcbMu4P5FPH3

The plays on offer are:

ABANDON HOPE  By Bronwyn Elsmore
Comedy directed by Braydon Priest
(3F, 1M)
An hilarious look at the lengths the women of the A-Bandon underwear factory will go to, on learning that their workplace, in the small town of Ruawhetu is about to close. A great chance to bring a slice of kiwiana to life.

HARDSTUFF  By Jules Tasca
Melodrama / thriller directed by Phil Dean
(2M)
Matt and John, both pharmacists, are at a secluded cabin for a weekend of hunting, but John has other plans. He wants to find out if Matt is having an affair with his wife. With a gun in his hand and menace in his voice he gets Matt to tell all. This is intense melodrama with a twist.

KEVIN - THE OTHER REINDEER  By Garry Thomas
Comedy Directed by Braydon Priest and Garry Thomas
(2F, 1M)
Just imagine what would happen in a kids show if one of the characters had a potty mouth that would run away on them at any minute. An adult version of a scene not presented in this years’ Rapunzel. Sholby and Oberon are two forest elves who have their picnic in the Enchanted Forest interrupted by Kevin, a reindeer. These are three delightful roles to play, with the potential to really make them your own in a collaborative process with the writer.

2020 PROGRAMME
Preparation is already underway to lock in our 2020 season, and if our full day play reading session is anything to go by, we’re all in for an absolute treat. Thanks to the team who were there. We all agreed it was great to get together, and will look to have more social play readings in future.

Drama, directed by Garry Thomas. YOU tells of Kathleen, now in her mid-forties anxiously waiting for the arrival of the man whom she gave up for adoption thirty years before. Years spent insulating herself against the pain of separation and loss fall away ‘like bricks in a flood wall’ as she allows herself to recall the events of that time.

Comedy, directed by Braydon Priest. An hilarious look at the lengths the women of the A-Bandon underwear factory will go to, on learning that their workplace, in the small town of Ruawhetu, is about to close. It’s amazing what creations you can come up with when you have to.
