LIZ PRICE UPDATE
 
This month seems to have flown by or maybe I feel that way because we have had a number of short working  weeks. I had the pleasure of being a visitor in our region this month taking my little men off to KAOS Adventure Outdoors event in Anglesea.  We had an amazing time, crazy weather and all! We can’t agree on what  our favourite activity was, with a tie between canoeing and stand up paddle boarding. Place this event in your diaries for next year, if you have little people in your family, as I am sure it has secured my spot in their hearts as mother of the year!
 
Earlier this month we had the pleasure of partnering with Tourism Australia, Austrade, Invest Victoria and Regional Development Victoria to host some investors in the region. The investors looked at a number of potential development sites and provided great insight to what is happening in the global visitor economy. A big thank you to all of the operators that helped make the famil a success especially Sam & Laura from Forage on the Foreshore, Natasha & Jimmy from the Fat Cow, Carrie & Tim from Timboon Ice Creamery, Maria Gordon from Grassroots Deli and the citizens of Eastern Marr who shared a welcome to Country and smoking ceremony with us. An extra special mention goes to Caroline Woods, not only for her inspiring ideas but pitching in on the day to make them a success. A huge thank you.
 
The region continues to boast an action packed events calendar which provides a great incentive for both new and return visitors to the region. Make sure you and your visitors enjoy on of the big events scheduled in May, Warrnambool May Racing Carnival or  GOR Festival of Running.

This month in addition to hosting the above investors, we also partnered with the Great Ocean Road Running Festival to host Will Woodward from the Guardian Newspaper. Will traveled to the Great Ocean Road on an activity based itinerary to focus on the additional experiences you can have  post the festival.

Meet Matt Charlesworth the winner of our Great Ocean Road VIP blogger of the year competition

Full time student, amateur writer/photographer & a passionate adventurer. You’ll find me out in the surf, discovering the outdoors or appreciating local music. I have been blogging for over a year, documenting my Victorian adventures on Humble Trail. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Business and also work as a Lifeguard and Duty Manager at an indoor pool close to home in the South-East suburbs of Melbourne. Some of my fondest memories of the Great Ocean Road region include chasing waterfalls deep in the Otway's and having my first taste of the Falls Festival last year. “collect memories, not things” is a simple but enlightening quote that I live by.  I believe that the value gained from an experience, will always outweigh that of any object. This explains my dream of someday converting an old van into a camper to see the very best that Australia has to offer.  I am over the moon about the opportunity to blog the Great Ocean Road events for the next 12 months.
We are excited to be working with Matt to promote our diverse Great Ocean Road events you can follow Matt's adventures via our social media channels "@visitgreatoceanroad".
 
One Hour Out.
We have recently partnered with One Hour Out which is a new dedicated digital platform showcasing all the best food and cultural experiences starting one hour out from Melbourne. Visit the newly launched website www.onehourout.com.au to view features on Bomboras, Captain Moonlight, Mt Duneed Estate,  Upstate Yoga and The Farmers Place.

We are continually working with China Digital to assist in promoting our Great Ocean Road Wechat account including competitions  in conjunction with our partners such as:
  •  Profiling what to do as a student along the GOR with a blog piece and a competition to win tickets to the Cape Otway Lightstation
  • What to do as a family along the GOR including a blog piece and competition to win family passes to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village

Australian Events Awards.
This is your chance to be crowned amongst Australia’s best events and achievements.

 
Entries open on 3 May for the Australian Event Awards, the national awards program for the Australian events industry. There are 10 categories for Australia’s best sporting, community, charity, tourism, cultural and corporate (and other) events and 10 achievement categories including for look, design and theming, technical achievement or innovation, marketing, communications or sponsorship, products or services, education, venue management and the best event producers and companies in the country.
 
Entries can be submitted via the online Entry Portal at www.eventawards.com.au. Entries started and paid for by 13 June 2017 will receive the Early Starters discount and entrants will still have time to work on these submissions up until entries close on 17 July.
 
The Australian events industry will gather on the Sunshine Coast on 13 September for the Awards Ceremony which will be followed by the Australian Event Symposium on 14-15 September. 
 
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT UPDATE – Andrew Humphris

It’s been a busy month!  We have recently launched some exciting new digital products in line with all of our new Destination Websites now going live. We are  very close to launching our new online store, where operators will be able to purchase many of our existing and new Business Services products through the secure online store on our corporate website.
 
Once the online store goes live, both current and new partners of GORRT will be able to renew their existing partnerships and purchase digital, print and value packages. Of course, we are still available to discuss our range of business services  and products with you, however making our range of services and products available online ensures GORRT keeps in pace with modern day technology.

With the introduction of our new Destination Websites, we are excited to announce that we have streamlined our popular Essentials and Essentials PLUS packages. This streamlining makes it easier for you to select the package that best suits the type of business you operate and the amount of exposure that you are looking for.

Promote your business in the NEW Official Destination Maps!

We are currently selling the next editions of each of the Official Destination Maps. Each of the ‘new look’ pocket sized publications feature a map specific to your destination and includes creative editorial and imagery providing visitors with information and inspiration around where to eat, things to do, and places to visit.  

75,000 print copies of each Destination Map will be distributed at accredited Visitor Information Centres across the Great Ocean Road Region and at major local accommodation and attractions plus a digital version will also be available.  The investment to add your listing in the map is just $495 and includes, an image, contact information, web address and a brief business description.

Hurry as spots are limited! We will be closing off listings by June 30 2017.

PROJECT UPDATE - JO BIRLEY

Taste of the Great Ocean Road.
We are close to launching the Taste of the Great Ocean Road campaign.  There are still limited opportunities for cafes and restaurants offering set menus featuring regional produce during the winter months to participate.  Please call Jo to discuss how you can be involved.

Central Otway Coast Destination Action Plan.
We have been working with local business, government agencies and community representatives from Wye River, Kennett River and Wongarra to develop a Destination Action Pan for the area.  This is an exciting step to plan for desired tourism outcomes for this area following the 15/16 Bushfire and the continuing recovery.

Open for business!
Trees Adventure, a new high ropes course attraction designed for all ages and abilities is now operating near Colac.  We welcome this as another great product, which will encourage visitors to stay in the  the region longer.
Sweet Thyme Cafe has taken up residence in the old Post Office building in Winchelsea.  An exciting new cafe, increasing the food and drink offering in the town and increasing the appeal of Winchelsea as a great journey break.
Little Feast in Aireys Inlet is a new health food oriented cafe worth a visit.  Aireys Inlet has seen several new cafes and restaurants open in recent months, making it quite a foodie haven!
When in Apollo Bay try out the new RAWR bar, offering vegan shakes, smoothies and healthy treats and bringing something totally new to Apollo Bay.

12 Apostles Coast & Hinterland Website - Live!

Lorne Website.

Port Fairy Website Review
Together with the Port Fairy Tourism Association and Moyne Shire Council a review of the www.portfairyaustralia.com.au website was recenlty held. Thankyou to those who attended and participated. All ideas and suggestions are currently being reviewed.

Warrnambool May Racing Carnival 2nd-4th May
Horse racing holds a very special place in the hearts of Victorians.  Their love of horse racing is reinforced every year as the number of people in Warrnambool double during the world renowned Tabcorp May Racing Carnival.

Trees Adventure Otway Park officially opened to the public on Friday, 14 April 2017. Located in Yeodene, next door to the outdoor fun park “Planet Mud,” between Forrest and Colac, the attraction is easily accessible for visitors to the region and locals alike.

The new attraction offers 8 challenge courses for visitors ranging in age from 4 years old and up with sessions lasting for 2 hours. There are 5 colour-coded course levels to choose from offering visitors the independence to choose which course they will traverse depending on their skills.

Hours of operation are Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday 9am-5pm, closed on Monday beginning in May. Public and School Holidays open every day 9am-5pm. Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
2017 VICTORIAN TOURISM CONFERENCE

Registrations for  the 2017 Victorian Tourism Conference (VTC17) which will be held at Flemington Racecourse on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 July are now open. The majority of the speakers and workshop presenters have been finalised and we’re confident that this this will be one of the best conference programs yet!  Click the link above  for further information and registration.
