Dear comrade <<First Name>>

Firstly, we would like to apologise for not sending more campaigning bulletins. Truth be told, most members of our steering committee are now very busy on the steering committee of the Labour Campaign for Free Speech. While there are obvious overlaps of the two campaigns, the LCFS has been set up with a very concrete, specific focus. And as soon as we launched it, the attacks on free speech by the government and the Labour Party were coming thick and fast. These attacks are of course the outcome of the witch-hunt on the left in the Labour movement - they were so successful that they are now being spread into wider society as part of a 'culture war' on anything even remotely critical of the establishment.

We are witnessing a very Orwellian effort by the government to attack free speech, particular on the question of Israel and Palestine - in the name of free speech!

While universities are being forced to implement the discredited IHRA misdefinition of antisemitism (which effectively bans anti-Zionism) and children being policed and hounded as part of the Prevent programme, the government pretends it is on a mission to 'protect' free speech, for example by banning the no-platforming of speakers on campus etc. This proposed free speech legislation is nothing but a sham and designed chiefly to curry favour with the right-wing press (there is an interesting article on this issue by law professor Mike Macnair in this week's Weekly Worker here).
  • We urge comrades to join this important campaign, which meets this Wednesday for it's second all-members' meeting, which will be chaired by Jackie Walker and will discuss a number of important issues. Details below.
  • Find below a couple of videos from a fanatic meeting organised by LCFS on the issue 'Palestine/Israel and academic freedom', which was adressed by Salma Yaqoob, Norman Finkelstein, Ilan Pappe, Moshe Machover and others.

Protest at the next Labour NEC meeting!

Labour Against the Witchhunt is proud to co-sponsor this protest and we'll bring our banners and placards. The Jewish Chronicle has been so kind to advertise this protest for us - click here to read all about it ;-)

We need to speak out against the huge injustices which hang over the Labour Party.
  • Jeremy Corbyn still has not had the whip restored to him.
  • Party officers remain suspended simply for allowing members to debate this injustice.
  • Hundreds of members remain suspended or expelled on bogus charges of antisemitism or 'bringing the party into disrepute'
  • The Forde Inquiry into outrageous dirty tricks at the heart of the party has been shelved.
This travesty of democracy cannot go on. Come to our protest-lobby of the next meeting of Labour’s National Executive Committee. Call for the restoration of the whip to Jeremy Corbyn and the reinstatement of unfairly suspended members.

Leading our demo will be the two CLPs of East Ham and West Ham outrageously suspended for bogus reasons. Everyone worried about the future of the Labour Party should attend.

Groups in support include Newham Socialist Labour, Labour Against The Witchhunt, Labour Campaign For Free Speech, and Labour Left Alliance and Labour In Exile Network. Let us know if your group wants to get involved and send a speaker - email us

12 noon, Tuesday 20 July
Location: Labour Party Head Office, 105 Victoria Street, London SW1E 6QT. Nearest tube/station: Victoria

The second all-members' meeting of our campaign on Wednesday June 30, chaired by Jackie Walker, will focus on the important question if free speech should be unrestricted or if there are exceptions, for example for 'racists' or 'fascists'.

At our launch conference in February 2021, we amended the first point of our ‘Charter for Free Speech’ with two irreconcilable amendments. We now want to discuss which of the two amendments should be deleted. That does not mean that the debate on this issue is ‘over’ or ‘settled’ - but we need to have a working document without internal contradictions. Tony Greenstein and Kevin Bean represent both sides of this important debate and you can read their supporting arguments here.

  • All existing members of the campaign will now have received the full agenda with all motions and their Zoom registration link. Please let us know if you think you are a member but have not received the documents.
  • New members may attend if they join before June 29. They will automatically receive a Zoom link for the meeting, which includes the full interactive agenda and standing orders. You can join here.
Palestine/Israel and academic freedom

In a number of universities, academics and staff are under threat of suspension for daring to speak out on Israel and Zionism, for example Bristol Professor David Miller. In addition, the government is threatening to defund universities who do not impose the discredited IHRA fake definition, which has been designed to conflate anti-Zionism and criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

Speakers include:

  • Norman Finkelstein, author, ‘The Holocaust Industry’
  • Salma Yaqoob, anti-war activist
  • Dr. Deepa Driver, union activist and academic
  • Moshe Machover, author, expert on Middle East
  • Saladin Meckled-Garcia, UCU UCL vice president
  • Ilan Pappe, Israeli socialist, University of Exeter
  • Tom Hickey, a leading member of BRICUP
  • Tony Greenstein, blogger, expert on Middle East
LAW's sponsors include:
  • Alexei Sayle, comedian
  • Ken Livingstone
  • Professor Moshé Machover, Israeli socialist and founder of Matzpen
  • Ian Hodson, president of the Bakers Union
  • Ken Loach, film director
