Oregon Olympians Shine in Rio
A remarkable 55 Olympians with ties to Oregon participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, highlighted by 12 exhilarating medal-winning performances in track and field. Portland resident and Oregon grad Matthew Centrowitz shocked the world by taking home gold in the men’s 1,500-meter race, the first U.S. runner to do so since 1908. Oregon native Ashton Eaton earned his second consecutive gold medal in the decathlon, once again cementing his title as the world’s greatest athlete, while his wife Brianne Theisen-Eaton won bronze in the heptathlon.
Barlow High grad Ryan Crouser set an Olympic record in winning gold in the men’s shot put, while Oregon alums English Gardner and Phyllis Francis earned gold in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Portland native Galen Rupp impressively took home bronze in the marathon, just the second race of that distance in which he has competed. Several other distance runners who train in Oregon earned medals as well: Mo Farah, gold in the 10,000 and 5,000-meter races, Evan Jager, silver in the steeplechase, Francine Niyonsaba, silver in the 800-meter race, and Paul Chelimo, silver in the 5,000-meter race.
We hope these incredible performances help to inspire all of the TrackTown Youth League athletes as we strive to develop the next generation of Oregon Olympians!
