The Difference Fair Trade Makes

Dear friends and comrades,

This month we are excited to share a new video we produced for Dr. Bronner's that highlights one of the world’s few sources of sustainable palm oil. The palm oil, used in Dr. Bronner’s bar soaps, is made by Dr. Bronner’s sistercompany Serendipalm via a fair trade and organic certified process that doesnot engage in deforestation, does not threaten wildlife or orangutan habitat, and does not push indigenous peoples off their land - unlike most conventional palm oil production worldwide. Some have said this is impossible, but Dr. Bronner's is proving otherwise. Please check out our new video, and read on to learn about our latest projects and other news that we've been thinking about this summer. If we haven't heard from you in a while, please drop us a line. We'd love to hear from you.
Cheers,

In the Works

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps

According to the World Wildlife Federation, palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet. It is estimated that palm oil is an ingredient in about half of all processed products sold in U.S. supermarkets. Palm fruit typically grows in the same climates as tropical rainforests, and the uncontrolled clearing of natural rainforests to create arable land for conventional oil palm plantations has led to widespread loss of these irreplaceable habitats—home to endangered species such as orangutans.

After a year and a half, we finally completed our latest video about one of the world’s few sources for ethically produced palm oil. We worked closely with Dr. Bronner's, Bell Visuals, Gather Films, and Jared Moshe on this production. It was a team effort and we are psyched to share it with the world. “Sustainable Palm Oil: The Difference Fair Trade Makes,” is a short video from Dr. Bronner's telling the story of Serendipalm, a sister company in Ghana that provides fair trade and organic palm oil while ensuring environmental stewardship, animal protection, and a living wage for farmers and workers. Please feel free to share this one if you are inspired.

We also recently worked with Gather Films to make a few videos to promote Dr. Bronner's in Singapore! Here's one of them.

Vote Hemp and Hemp Industries Association

We're in the midst of an historic summer for hemp: hemp crops are flourishing in Kentucky and Colorado for the first time in decades; and the number of HIA state chapters is increasing, now with 6 states that have founded local networks to expand the hemp industry in their business and agriculture communities (Nebraska, Indiana, Tennessee, Washington, Florida and Kentucky). Planning and media outreach is underway for the upcoming hemp harvests to take place this fall. Movement has coordinated outreach for a hemp building course to take place in Colorado, September 5-7, and we're already thinking strategy for Hemp History Week 2015.

We continue to see hemp in the media, especially stories focusing on progress with the research and development of pilot hemp crops. Take a moment to watch the news update below about University of Kentucky's hemp crop, which has already reached a height of 5 feet in less than 2 months!
