Birkie Lodging
Now that you’ve registered for the greatest show on snow, are you in need of a place to lay your head before and after the event?  The Birkie has two options available to you, by way of the “Lodging Directory” and “Dorm Housing”.  The Lodging Directory is a list of hotels, motels, B&B’s as well as homes that individuals rent out during the Birkie events in February.  If you'd like a copy, call the Birkie office at (715) 634-5025 or email us for details.  Dorm Housing aka: “Sleeping at the School”  is a long-running Birkie tradition for many skiers.  If you're interested in economical lodging by sleeping on the gymnasium floor of the Hayward Intermediate School, registration is expected to open by December 1!  Limited to 200 people and available through pre-registration only, all lodgers must supply their own bedding and will have access to the showers.  There is no waxing space nor food service available at the school.
Join honorary ALS Ski Team captain John Jaeckel – 17-time American Birkebeiner ski racer – and the American Birkebeiner® Ski Foundation (ABSF) in supporting the three-year partnership between the ALS Assn. WI Chapter and the ABSF through its Birkie® Skiers For Cures program.  Details on how you can join the fight against ALS at the 2016 Birkie are in development.  Visit to learn more about becoming involved.  Read more about John's  battle with ALS.

Volunteer of the Month – Chuck Aubart
After over 21 years of volunteering his time to the Birke as finish line medals race chief, Chuck Aubart has chosen to hang up his Birkie bib and retire.  Recently, Chuck was presented with an engraved Moen Bell to thank him for his time and dedication to the Birkie.  A
traditional Norwegian cheering bell,  each is cut from an iron sheet, formed, and coated with brass recycled from spent ammunition cartridges from Norwegian military practice ranges.  As a retired Naval Officer, a longtime volunteer of the Hayward Lion’s Club, the treasurer of the Sawyer County Fair Board of Directors, and his years as a loyal Birkie chief, it is with deepest appreciation that we say good-bye to Chuck and thank him for his many years of service and dedication to the Birkie, our community, and our country.   Pictured L-R: Allan Serrano, Birkie Event Director, and Chuck Aubart, Birkie Volunteer of the Month extraordinaire.

Volunteers & Race Chiefs
Volunteers are the life-blood of the Birkie and forever giving of their time and efforts in putting on world-class events.  If you or someone you know would like to volunteer for the 2016 Slumberland American Birkebeiner, online volunteer registration will open December 1
.  With over 1500 shifts requiring over 2000 volunteers, there is something for everyone!  We invite you to become an integral part of what makes the Birkie happen!   BirkieTour Volunteering  is now open.

Race chiefs are the backbone of any volunteer area during our Birkie events.  It is the Chiefs who manage all aspects of any given area, from aid stations, medals & awards, to parking and events.  There are a few race chief positions available.  If you're interested in being an uber volunteer as a Birkie race chief please email the Birkie office.
Have You Skied Twenty or More Birkies?
By now, you’ve received information in the mail about a partnership between the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation and the Birchleggings Club, designed to build support for the forthcoming Tony Wise Museum of the American Birkebeiner and grow the membership of the Birchleggings Club. Donors of $100 or more to the Museum will become Museum Founders, with prominent and permanent recognition in the Museum. You’ll also get a one-year complimentary membership in Birchleggings Club (new members only). And those who are already members of the Birchleggings Club? In addition to becoming a Museum Founder, you’ll be helping the Club by renewing early, without a reminder, and save a stamp, an envelope, and have the satisfaction of helping both organizations. Waxing by the Numbers
Swix Offers Wax-Mania Trivia Tips
While Swix offers up a straightforward system for organizing wax by listing in order -  from cold to warm and from no fluorocarbon to high fluorocarbon - all the waxes in its line-up, understanding how waxing really works and the advantages it offers takes time.

Here’s a bit of number trivia for the Birkie focused skier:
10. Wax can offer up as much as 10% difference in ski glide speed.
  9. Number of minutes its useful to let wax cool before scraping?

Check out our snazzy new website and read up on why roller skiing will make you the coolest!

Grab a friend and learn how to XC ski or fine-tune your skating or classic technique with the City of Ashland Parks and Rec. Dept. on December 19th. Stone Grinding Facts and Myths
With Nordic ski stone grinding there seem to be more questions than answers. What does "sealed bases " mean? How many times can a ski be stoneground? How long before a race should a ski be stoneground? Do skis really get faster the more times they are waxed? Learn the answers in this blog entry by Matt Liebsch.   Also, keep up with Tony Mommsen's Wave One Project (a blog about training for the Birkie).  Visit Gear West Ski & Run!
