Garden Design with Unthirsty Plants

Speaker: Flora Grubb

Location: Lotusland

Enter the staff gate at 695 Ashley Road

(Lotusland is closed to the public in January)

Flora Grubb is an esteemed Garden Designer and owner of the San Francisco nursery, showroom and coffee shop Flora Grubb Gardens. The nursery offers a stunning array of plants and ideas for dry landscapes. Although succulents are mainstay,  there are numerous other lush plants in concert with garden furnishings, a coffee shop, books and art objects. Visit the website for a delightful preview and visit the nursery when you are in San Francisco.

Board Meeting

The next board meeting is January 19th at Vicky Strickland's, meeting begins promptly at 9:30 am.
Message from Norma Jean

Saying thank you to Susanne McEwen and Carol Newman seems so inadequate for what they accomplished in co-chairing our fundraiser.  I knew that the boutique would be special but it was so much more than that.  Also, thank you to Dani Hahn who secured Mindy Bingham for our December program.  It was wonderful to see the excitement of those who participated in making their beautiful wreaths.  Again the arrangements for Hospice were lovely.   But what excited me most at both events was the level of participation from our membership.

My wish to all of you is the happiest of holidays and I want to share a favorite Christmas poem.  You have to remember that my roots are Minnesotan and they are rural.

When the stocking have been emptied and the carolers are gone,
When your dreams are full of memories and your hearts are filled with song,
When the footprints in the snow have led you back where you belong,
May the simple joy of Christmas linger on, and on and on . . . .

Flower Design Committee

There are only five spots left for the Floral Design 101 Workshop on Wednesday, February 25.  If you would like to attend, please send a check for $175 made out to the Garden Club of Santa Barbara to Betsy Coates.

***Floral Design Tip of the Month***

With the holidays just around the corner, here is an idea for an arrangement that will bring the spirit of the season to your home.

*Select a round container and place two thick and strong rubber bands around the middle of it.

*Insert either well-soaked floral foam (raised about 1" higher than the container edge), chicken wire, or curly willow into the container.

*Place the container on a turntable as it will make the arranging process easier.

*Make a rounded arrangement of white flowers (white  roses work particularly well), holly and/or hypericum berries.

*If using as a table centerpiece, adjust the size of the container and height of the arrangement.

*Once your arrangement is completed, slip WRAPPED red and white or green and white striped candy canes under the rubber bands.

*Tie a wide, wired red, white, or green ribbon into a bow around the container so rubber bands are covered.

And, just like that, you will have created a festive floral arrangement to enjoy in your home!

Attending a GCA flower show is an eye-popping, and eye-pleasing experience.  Two clubs in Zone XII will be having flower shows in the near future and all divisions are open to exhibitors from GCA clubs.  Hillsborough Garden Club will be hosting one April 23-24 and The Honolulu Garden Club will be hosting a GCA Major Flower Show May 8-10.  While it would be fun to go to the one in Honolulu, it would certainly be easier to caravan up to Hillsborough to see the show, and cheer on those of you who enter.  Road trip, anyone?!!

For more information about these shows and seeing each show's schedule, go to the GCA website, click on Flower Shows, and follow the prompts.  Also, while in the Flower Shows category, scroll down to the Floral Design Sub Committee. There, you will find photos of floral arrangements with explanations about the various styles.  The GCA website is truly a source of valuable information.

 Ways and Means
Many, many thanks to each of you for contributing your time, talents and money to make Tidings, Trimmings and Twigs a most successful event. Together we had fun working and playing. The wonderful income generated will help support our many projects.
Now sit back and enjoy the holidays, you each deserve a pat on the back and some peace and quiet.
Grateful holiday wishes

Centennial Committee

Steve Winhager, Executive Director of the Botanic Garden, has invited the Garden Club members to help plant the maze. It is part of our gift to the Botanic Garden in honor of our Centennial. He has set aside two days for this project. They are Tuesday, December 9th at 9 am. He added Wednesday December 10th, in case we do not finish the work on Tuesday. We have a good group of volunteers and would like to include more members from our Garden Club if you are available. You do not need to bring any tools but you may want to bring garden gloves. Please contact Shirley Ann Hurley: (687-6347) or <>. Steve has asked for a count so we need to know if you are coming. You do not need to contact anyone if you have already signed up. If you sign up for Wednesday only and we have finished our work, we will call  or email you to let you know that the work is complete.

For those of you on the Centennial Committee, please note that the next brown bag meeting will be immediately following the January 5th General Meeting at Lotusland. Lotusland has been contacted and will find a place for us to meet.
