9 am Refreshments    9:45 am Meeting
Location: Santa Barbara Museum of Art

Planning a Public Space: Grand Park, Los Angeles
Speaker: Marc Rios

Formally trained in both architecture and landscape architecture, Marc has long seen those two disciplines as inseparable. He founded Rios Associates in 1985 with a singular vision: to imagine, design and build complete environments. The firm quickly developed an international reputation for its groundbreaking multidisciplinary approach to commissions like Grand Park, Los Angeles.

Grand Park exemplifies Marc's commitment to use the power of landscape to express the culture of a community; the diverse cultural landscape of Los Angeles where 244 distinct languages are spoken. Thematically, the four block park celebrates Los Angeles' identity as a 21st century multi-cultural global city. Recently, over 400,000 attended the Grand Park 2015 New Years celebration

***Floral Design Tips of the Month***

Creative Flower Arrangement by Jean Taylor is a book, now out of print but available through independent booksellers on Amazon, that comes highly recommended by our own member, Carol Swift, a GCA Floral Design Judge Emeritus.  It is a comprehensive book and an invaluable source of information, ideas, and inspiration.  It is definitely a book that you will refer to many times and will be a very useful addition to your library.

If you haven't already done so, be sure to subscribe to By Design, a wonderful magazine published four times a year by the Flower Arranging Study Group.  A one year subscription is $30.  Make your check out to GCA and mail to Roberta DuBeshter, 43 Knollwood Drive, Rochester, NY  14618.  It is a font of information, with beautiful photos of prizewinning floral arrangements, helpful tips and resources.  Additionally, information about upcoming Floral Arranging Study Group workshops and registration details are included in each issue.   These workshops are open to ALL GCA members who subscribe to By Design magazine.

LadyBuds will meet Wednesday, February 4, 9:30 at Nancy Read's home. Please bring flowers, greens and clippers. RSVP,

Horticulture Committee

Projects Committee

Just a reminder that we are getting close to our deadline for requests for funds. If you are aware of any coming to us or know of a non-profit who would be a good match please contact them or me asap. Remember the applications are on our Club's website and due January 15th. The committee will meet on Thursday, February 5th at 9:30 at Vicky Strickland's home.

Membership Missive

As you know in an effort to be sure the Membership procedure is inclusive and confidential, the Board added a new requirement to the Standing Rules.  In the roster, page 69 Part A Membership, Paragraph f. it reads:

“Before formal acceptance of candidates, the President will announce at a general meeting that names have been submitted for membership consideration.  The announcement will be recorded in the minutes and Budding News.  Members who are interested in knowing the candidates’ names and who wish to comment may contact the Membership Chairperson within two weeks of the announcement date.  Any comments will be treated confidentially and reviewed by both Membership and Executive Committees as part of the application process.”

Because I will be away most of those two weeks, if you are interested in provisional candidate names, please call Dana Kent, fellow membership committee member.   The dates to comment are now from January 5 to January 19.  Please remember that confidentiality is paramount.

Thank you, Bobbie Kinnear
