Sustainable Neighbourhoods News

Are you coming to the Living Smart Festival?
Can you help us promote Sustainable Neighbourhoods?

We are looking for a few more volunteers to help on our stall at Council's Living Smart Festival on Saturday 26 September.

Last year over 20,000 people attended the festival.  It's a fantastic opportunity to showcase your projects and recruit interest in your group.  We'll also be doing some promotion and education around reducing plastic bag use.
It's also a lovely way to meet some other Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers.

Here's some information about our plans for the day.  Our more experienced volunteers will be there to help if you haven't done this kind of thing before.  Our roster is split into 2-hour blocks to ensure the stall is attended with a team of at least 2 people throughout the day:
  • 7 – 9am  (includes set up from 7-8am)
  • 9 – 11 am
  • 11am – 1pm
  • 1 – 3pm  (includes pack up from 2 – 3pm)
We will need to finalise the roster by Wednesday 16 September.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you are keen to participate.
Do you know a Plastic Bag Free Champion?
Do you know a local business who is reducing their plastic bag use?  We are looking for Plastic Bag Free Champions - Lake Macquarie retailers who are demonstrating their leadership and going plastic bag free.
Can you help us find examples of these community leaders?  Use this handout to approach local businesses.
Just a note that Rachelle will be on leave from 18 September to 6 October.
You will still be able to contact the Alliance during that time, and Shandala will be able to help with your request via email or phone 4921 0126.
Save the date for a Super Sunday

8 November 2015

The Super Sunday Bike Count is an annual effort to record recreational cycle numbers.

Early site registrations will open 21 September.  We will notify you as soon as registrations are open so that you can volunteer at the best sites.  The Bicycle Network donates $120 for each site completed.
Plant Swap and Neighbourhood Celebration

The Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group is holding a plant swap event to celebrate the launch of their Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan.

Residents will bring a plant or seeds from home to swap with their neighbours.  The focus will be on natives, water-saving plants like succulents, and edible herbs and vegies.

Sunday 11 October,  10am - 2pm
Wilkinson Park, adjacent to Cardiff Skate Park.  Walk, ride or park in Railway Parade.

Become an Alliance Board Member
Do you have a passion for Sustainable Neighbourhoods?  And experience in fundraising, project management, marketing or strategic planning?

We are seeking additional board members to join our wonderful team.  Board members are members of their local Sustainable Neighbourhood groups, and are responsible for supporting and leading the Sustainable Neighbourhood network as a whole.  The Alliance Board meets monthly, and are active via email at other times.

We are preparing for our Annual General Meeting, scheduled for Saturday 14 November, and would be happy to discuss board member roles with anyone who is considering nominating.
