Sustainable Neighbourhoods News

The Alliance hopes you, your families and neighbourhoods are all safe following last week's wild weather.  Council's website has useful information to help with recovery and clean up efforts: Stay up to date by following Council's Facebook or Twitter pages.
Thank you!
We are planning a special get-together in June to showcase some of your excellent Sustainable Neighbourhood projects and celebrate all the fantastic work you have been involved in.
We'd like to inspire your next project, and give everyone an opportunity to meet and celebrate our achievements in a casual setting.  Details coming soon.

What Sustainable Neighbourhood projects would you like to find out more about?  Here's some examples.

What happens behind the scenes?

Did you know this great bunch of volunteers are your Alliance Board members?

Their work is crucial to the smooth running of your group's activities.  The Alliance Board has broad responsibilities including reviewing your group's activities, risk assessments and grant applications to ensure they are safe and effective.

The Alliance is also responsible for providing relevant training opportunities, advocating on behalf of the Sustainable Neighbourhoods network, ensuring we meet legal requirements, and ensuring the long term success of the network.

Board members meet monthly, undertake a range of out-of-session tasks, and are generally very active in their local Sustainable Neighbourhood group as well!

Your group can help make their job easier by giving plenty of notice (at least 3 weeks) of your group's upcoming projects, events and grant applications.
Congratulations to the Greater Charlestown group who organised an excellent forum in April, to discuss Work Life Balance.  Over 40 people attended, and enjoyed lively discussion from 3 local women including Mayor Jodie Harrison, Maree McCarthy and Christine Aus.  They are pictured here with Chelsey Zuiderwyk who facilitated the event.

Emergency Ready
The Pelican Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group were better prepared for last week's wild weather following their information stall at Council's Emergency Services Expo on 12 April.
They used the opportunity to sign up new members, and help spread the 'Be Ready Be Safe' message by displaying easy to assemble home and car emergency kits.
The group also recently reviewed and updated their Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan flyer.
Being social
Are you on Facebook?
Did you know Sustainable Neighbourhood groups in Dudley, Greater Charlestown and Edgeworth Cameron Park have Facebook pages?
Are there others we don't know about?

We are considering starting a 'Sustainable Neighbourhoods Lake Macquarie' page to help promote everyone's events, and network with other likeminded organisations.

Would your group find this useful?  Do you think your target audience uses Facebook?
Are there any volunteers out there who would be keen to help set up a page and administrate it?
You can find out more about the role and objectives of the Alliance.

We'd appreciate your input

Are there ways you think the Alliance could support your group better?

Do you have ideas or challenges that are relevant for Sustainable Neighbourhood groups across the whole city?

You can contact us to provide suggestions, requests and ideas at any time.

Do you have a project or idea you think other Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers around Lake Macquarie would be interested in? Email us at admin@sustainableneighbourhoods.org.au and we can include it in the next edition.
