Sustainable Neighbourhoods recognised at Lake Mac Australia Day Awards

Lake Macquarie's Australia Day awards celebrate the achievements of volunteers, community groups and young citizens.  The inspiring work of Sustainable Neighbourhood groups was recognised at a special awards ceremony held in January.

Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (pictured above with Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Cr Kay Fraser) were named Community Group of the Year, for their outstanding contribution to community life, and commitment to environmental sustainability.  In the last 12 months, the group has established themselves as a key focal point for the community, and have created a range of projects and events that are relevant, bring the community together, and are changing the social norms in their neighbourhood.
The Wangi Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group were joint winners of the Community Event of the Year award for the Wangi Centenary Celebrations. Drawing an attendance of 1500, the Wangi Centenary Celebrations united the whole community to celebrate their rich history and culture. With a strong focus on promoting local business, highlighting sustainability issues and providing education, the Wangi Centenary Celebrations and Festival added to the community’s spirit and pride of place.
Frank Mieszala, a member of the Pelican Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, won Volunteer of the Year for his significant contribution to the Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan.  His ability to convey complex information in an easily understood manner has been instrumental in strengthening partnerships and encouraging community collaboration. His hard work and volunteering efforts have significantly helped the Lake Macquarie community.

Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners for their contributions to our community and environment!

Measuring our impact
Do you know why people attend your events, how they find out about them, and what makes them come back?
As part of the Strengthening Sustainable Neighbourhoods project, we will be surveying attendees at Sustainable Neighbourhood events.
Please let us know what events you have coming up, so that we can arrange for our survey team to attend.

  • Neighbour Day, Sunday 26 March - Neighbour day encourages us to build better relationships with the people who live nearby, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
