A Fun week

Cover crops, pig harvest, melon harvest, rain, cool weather, crutches

Fall is here, look at these fall crops! All of a sudden we're thinking of the coming frost. I heard one old time farmer say that if we make it until the first full moon of September without a frost, we'll have four more weeks of frost free weather. I'm not sure how that will hold up, but that's a hopeful forecast.
The picture on the left is a bummer-I ruptured my achilles tendon jumping into the pickup truck-and am now on crutches. It's a bit harder to farm this way, but we'll find a way to make it work. I can still sit and clean garlic! It'll be an interesting fall season...On a better note, the arugula is bumping. We've had really great rain this fall and this specific succession is coming in strong.
The biggest joy of the week is the melon harvest! Remember how late they were planted? The first succession was planted and didn't germinate, and by the time we realized this problem it was almost too late to replant. But we replanted anyways, just in case it would work out, and it has. We were uncertain if we'd get any fruit before the frost came, and indeed we have. We have plentiful melons and watermelons to be had this week and next week. You'll get a choice to pick up a watermelon or melon at your dropsite this week. On the right we're transplanting kohlrabi out in the field.
This week in your box you will find:
Beets
Watermelon or melon
Lettuce
Kale/collard/chard
Sage
Flower
Cabbage
Peppers
Eggplant
Cucumber
Zucchini/Summer squash
Arugula
Radish
Broccoli or cauliflower
