Message from Markus (GYS Artistic Director)

Welcome back returning GYS families, and Hello to everyone new to Guelph Youth Singers. I’ve been asked to write a short update about the NEW ensembles we are offering in the choir this year. Some of the groups have been formed because of changing demographics, and others to add to our comprehensive programming. Many of you were able to enjoy this exciting new lineup at the PopCan concert on October 27.
Young Men’s Ensemble (YME, jokingly referred to as Why Me?) is our wonderful new choir for boys with changing voices. Tuesdays for 90 minutes we combine changed and changing tenor and bass voices, and two trebles who just wanted to hang out with the gentlemen. We have optimum fun while exploring our new voices in a safe environment. The gentlemen are already determined to be ready to bring back our fantastic SATB choir once their voices settle. This new group will bring unique, all-male repertoire to our concerts.
Our most senior choir, sheVoce, is offering advanced singing opportunities to females who would normally have slipped into SATB. This excellent group of seven singers features our more advanced grade 11 and 12’s in music suited for trios and quartets. These ladies are being challenged with some cool music, like a jazzy chart by Diana Krall, a six-part chart of Sorry by Justin Bieber, along with more traditional music for our December concert.
Music Theatre Academy is a specialized Triple Threat theatre program, this year featuring 8 performers. To this point, we’ve been working on improvisation as our main focus, with many guest workshops to come before Christmas. January will be the start of our own musical to be mounted in a separate performance in the spring.
It has been a great start to the new season. It is a joy to work with these young people as they raise their voices.

GYS is in need of a new storage location for the music library (that would be frequently accessible).  It currently consists of about 16 different size filing cabinets, some of which have been graciously donated - thank you Fred Lauzon of Northern Paving (Parent of Elisha Funk, board member). The current storage is in a basement of a church in Fergus, ON. to which we have been given informal notice to vacate.  If anyone has suggestions that could help GYS find a new home for the music library, please send ideas to It would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks for your help!   - Cathy & Bryan.

Message from Pam (GYS President)

What a start it has been for the GYS choirs this year. Just two months into the season, and the choirs have spent time in rehearsals learning technique, working on theory as well as having fun at the camp retreats. Their hard work was on display on the weekend in the two concerts on Saturday, October 27th that featured all of choristers performing the best of Canadian Pop!

Looking ahead we have the winter concert on December 1, 2018 for all choristers, and our senior choristers will be performing with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra on December 9th. An important element for the GYS is community outreach, and our choristers will be caroling for seniors on December 12th.

The choir does rely on fund raising for a significant portion of our budget. We have a number of fundraising initiatives underway: fundscrip gift card sales to help with holiday shopping and gifts for those “hard to buy for folks”, poinsettias to assist with decorating, and our ever popular raffle for a wine cooler (pre-filled!).  Cooks and bakers will be called on to help with our annual cookie walk and soup/chili dinners. Please bring these fundraising opportunities to the attention of your neighbours, family and business associates. Companies can also support the choir by taking out advertisements in our concert program or through corporate donations.
On behalf of the board, I would like to acknowledge the volunteers that have supported the choir this fall – the chaperones at camp and concerts, the theory markers, riser movers and ticket sellers – without our volunteers the choir would not be able to sing!

Message from Jill (GYS Chorister Liaison)

Hello all GYS parents!
I’m Jill.
I am in Grade 11, at John F. Ross C.V.I. I absolutely love to sing, act, dance and be outside. I’m in Choir III, Chamber Choir and SheVoce. My goal with my position is to be a positive role model, answer any questions choristers and parents have from a senior chorister perspective, and make personal connections with parents and choristers alike! As well, I will be promoting GYS on social media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I hope to instil further the safe, inspiring and wonderfully musical environment GYS is for me, for this amazing community! If you have any questions, my email is
-Jill :)
Thanks to the GYS families who responded to our survey last May. We had 41 responses and lots of excellent and thoughtful feedback. The information you provided will be used in future planning and decision-making.
Here are just a few of the highlights:
- 78% of respondents were very satisfied with GYS communications.
- 80% were very satisfied with volunteer opportunities.
- 60% were very satisfied with fund-raising efforts.
- Nearly 40% of respondents indicated they have been part of GYS for up to 3 years and 32% had been with GYS for more than 5 years! Last year was the first year for nearly 11% of respondents.
We plan to send out a survey each spring so look for the link next year and please continue to share your thoughts with us.

The skies may be stormy, and the roads may be filled with last-minute holiday shoppers, but nothing should keep you from coming to Guelph Youth Singers winter extravaganza, Snow Squall!  Wrap yourself up in the warmth of 85 young, pure voices as they take you on a journey through songs of the season, Canadian classics, and music that will fill your soul. Neither wind, nor sleet, nor snow squalls can silence these enthusiastic choristers as we celebrate wintertime in Guelph!

Fall fun at camp and POP CAN, our first performance!

GYS volunteers are THE BEST! We could not do it without you!
