Peninsula READS COVID-19 Response Update

As our world, our nation, and our community continue to navigate the “new normal” that is now necessary due to the spread of COVID-19, we at Peninsula READS are inspired by the determination and creativity of our learners and their tutors to continue the learning process needed to reach their literacy goals.  We are committed to the learning goals of our adult learners, as well as to the health and safety of our entire Peninsula READS family.  Therefore, in an effort to protect our staff, volunteers and adult learners, we have adopted the following steps:

  • Peninsula READS Newport News and Hampton offices will remain closed to the public through at least April 30th.  If this date changes, you will be notified via email and all of our social media platforms.

  • Classes being held at the YMCA and adult education facilities across the region remain suspended until further notice, when we can determine the safety of the learning environments.

  • In adherence to CDC and VDH COVID-19 guidelines, learners and tutors can continue their sessions via phone. Online distance learning and printed learning packet pick-up options are also available. Tutors have been polled regarding their preference and should receive further information and set-up assistance from our Program Specialist by April 1st.

  • Learners will be contacted by their tutor regarding the setup of future tutoring sessions. Learners and tutors can contact the office Monday – Thursday. 9:30am – 2:30pm at 757-283-5776 for support and more information.

  • All events have been postponed, including Eat Spell Laugh and Open House, with new dates to be announced.

  • Staff will remain available via phone and email to continue the support of our volunteers, learners and community.

  • Please stay informed with the facts about the coronavirus/COVID-19; practice social distancing, wash your hands often and abide by the guidelines meant to protect you, your families, and those around you.

  • For the latest updates, please like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
