Great British High Street Awards judges visit Northwich
Northwich was visited on Tuesday 3rd September by judges from the Great British High Street (GBHS) Awards as they cast their eye over the town and learned about the numerous events, projects and initiatives that have been delivered here over the past year.

For the second year running, Northwich is bidding to be crowned a ‘Rising Star’ in the GBHS Awards, sponsored by Visa, which recognises and celebrates the communities that are working together to revive local high streets.
The town’s application, which is being led once again by the Northwich Business Improvement District (BID), focuses on the comprehensive calendar of events organised, the number of digital initiatives delivered, community collaboration on projects and the diversity exhibited by Northwich’s businesses.

Over the past year in particular Northwich has hosted an international festival, seen over 50 businesses host artwork by local residents in their shop windows and teamed up with Cheshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group (CDSSG) to help Northwich become the first town in the north west to achieve Makaton friendly status.
Northwich has upped its game environmentally too, creating wildflower gardens in the town centre and organising community litter picks to help tidy up problem areas.

On judging day itself GBHS representatives visited CDSSG to learn about the processes involved in the Makaton initiative and paid visits to Pretty Princess Cakes and Bakes, the High Street Barber Shop, Board Beans Café, The Salty Dog, Crate Hair and Abda’s Café to chat to business owners and learn about their experiences of working in Northwich and the town’s strong community spirit.

Vote for Northwich
Northwich named first town in the North West to be Makaton friendly
Northwich has officially been named the first town in the North West and only the third in the UK to achieve its ‘Makaton Friendly’ status.

Makaton was developed as a simpler form of sign language
to help people who find it difficult to communicate.
The Makaton Friendly scheme recognises organisations that strive to make their services accessible to Makaton users. Overall, over 200 people from 30 local businesses in Northwich have attended training since April.

Associate Director of Memberships and Partnerships at The Makaton Charity Hannah Anderson has extended her congratulations to Northwich.
“It’s fantastic that Northwich is embracing Makaton within the community, you are opening opportunities for more members of the community to socialise and feel included within your town. Such a brilliant achievement, well done Northwich!”

The countdown is on to Now Northwich
The Now Northwich festival is less than one month away and a few of the events at the festival have been revealed!

After the success of last year’s festival, this year is expected to captivate the crowds and surprise the spectators with local, national and international performers.
This year will see a family zone too! This will include the Bewonderment Machine, a miniature theatrical flight from A Bird in the Hand which promises to empower the young to care, to be curious and to believe in their own strength.

There will also be a brand new youth zone at the festival, situated at Barons Quay, where dance performances and sets from DJ EWOK will create a welcoming place for young people to hang out.
A number of other acts have already been confirmed including giant insects by Spanish company Sarruga and Lance-Moi en L’air (Throw Me in the Air) by Joli Vyann, an exciting mix of fluid dance, impressive circus and partner acrobatics.

Visit the Now Northwich website for more information about the schedule of events.

Cheshire Police trialling new online portal for shops and businesses
Cheshire Constabulary is trialling a new scheme which allows shops and businesses, which have been victims of crime, to easily upload evidence straight to the police website.

The pilot launched on Wednesday 21 August and businesses in Crewe and Widnes benefit from the scheme. If successful, it will be rolled out across the county.

The new system will allow shops and businesses to upload CCTV and witness statements straight to an online portal via the police website. It will make the process of retrieving this information simpler and more efficient, providing cost savings for both businesses and the Constabulary.
