Our calling is to share the loving hospitality of God, seeing Christ in friend and stranger.

What's coming up?

February 2016
This Lent we will be focusing on our mission statement: our calling is to share the loving hospitality of God, seeing Christ in friend and stranger.

What does this mean in practise? How does it affect what we believe, understand or feel about God, ourselves and others? How do we as a church live this out in our local community and the wider world? How do we best use our resources to show hospitality and welcome?

Please get involved and keep the theme of hospitality in your thoughts and prayers as we discuss these things together. Everyone is welcome at any of the following during Lent.

The festival is centred around VOX: a multi-sensory wind harp installation by Output Arts. The main programme features performances and original commissions and collaborations from artists, musicians, dancers and storytellers responding to the themes of breath, wind & air, and to the sound of the harp. Contributors include BishiKarine PolwartJason SinghCandoco Dance Company and Sam LeeTickets are on sale – take a look at all the events here.

There are other community events including TILT: a mass of paper windmills in the churchyardBREATHING SPACE: an opportunity to experience the wind harp in silence, between 12noon and 1pm every day except Monday, with occasional guidance from diverse meditation practitioners; an exciting community singing project, KITE; and conversations between people of different faiths on what the theme of air, breath and wind mean in their various traditions and cultures.

You can also get involved by volunteering.

Grand Fundraising Auction - Postponed
A big thank you to the many people who have offered time, skills or items for the Grand Fundraising Auction. Unfortunately, due to slow sales of the tickets the organising committee has decided that the Auction set for 20th February will be postponed.

However, you now get two for the price of one!
  1. Mini Auction of Perishables.
After the Mothering Sunday service on 6th March (joint service starts at 10.30am) where time-dependent items and some gifts will be auctioned alongside a healthy dose of great coffee, nibbles and soft drinks.
  2. Musical Social.
In May (date to be confirmed) in The Old Church where the majority of items will be auctioned. Keep your eye out for more details soon.

Stoke Newington School are proud to present a ‘Composers Concert’ featuring no less than 6 world premiere A level compositions for strings and wind instruments!

The concert will also feature Year 11 (GCSE) Ensemble performances of music as diverse as John Taverner, Sting, Dizzie Gillespie and Passenger.

Please come and support the students and your local Outstanding music department!

The concert is free with charitable donations to fund new instruments for SNS pupils.

6.30-7.30pm, Monday, 29th February in the New Church.

New Mass Setting
If you attend the 11am Sunday service, then please consider staying on for half an hour after the service (over coffee) on 28th February and 13th March to learn 2 new, additional musical settings of the mass, thus increasing our repertoire.  We’d like to launch a new setting during the Easter season and it would be great if a lot of us got to grips with it before we arrive at Easter!
Syrian Refugees in Hackney

If you signed up to express an interest in supporting the re-settlement of Syrian Refugees in Hackney, please note, there will be a meeting on Sunday 21st February 12.30-2pm in the Old Church. For more info, have a word with Dilly.
