Calisphere and the Online Archive of California (OAC) are gateways to unique collections held by libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions throughout California.

New Collections from the USC Digital Library!

The University of Southern California (USC) is home to one of the oldest private academic research libraries in California. The USC Libraries have been developing collections for more than a century, and now include 23 libraries and information centers, as well as the USC Digital Library.

The USC Digital Library is the digital home for original research materials selected for archiving at the USC Libraries, and facilitates new and creative opportunities to provide enhanced access to primary source material representing the institution’s subject strengths in the history of Los Angeles, California and the American West, including study of the border regions; Holocaust, genocide and exile studies; East Asian languages and cultures; the fine and performing arts including cinematic arts; and LGBTQ history and culture, particularly relating to West Coast activists and activism.

We are thrilled to share that the USC Digital Library collections are now discoverable on Calisphere -- over 360,000 items in nearly 60 collections -- including digital images of drawings, illuminated manuscripts, maps, photographs, posters, prints, rare illustrated books, as well as audio and video recordings, and more. Explore these newest collections and stroll through the city street murals of ‘90s Los Angeles, thumb through the letters of Pulitzer Prize winner Hamlin Garland, discover how a mathematical system called the Viterbi Algorithm shapes our modern world… and serendipitously stumble upon the curiously surreal:
"Alligators going down a toboggan slide at an alligator farm, (possibly the California Alligator Farm, Los Angeles), ca.1900."
Discover all of the USC Digital Library collections!

Tips and Reminders!

Publishing finding aids through RecordEXPRESS

RecordEXPRESS is a freebie tool for quickly and easily publishing information about your collections in the form of an EAD finding aid. Finding aids created through RecordEXPRESS can be published to the OAC with the push of a button.

You can access RecordEXPRESS through your OAC Contributor Dashboard. You can even attach supplemental PDF files to your EAD collection guides, in cases where you have longer collection inventories and other descriptive information that is not encoded in EAD.

A user guide is available in this RecordEXPRESS solution, but you can also catch our live overview on Wednesday, January 15th, which will be followed by an office hours session. Please see meeting details to register.
