Think Ahead!

Click here for a list of our member farms that provide Fall or Winter CSAs.

Create a CSA Pickup Site

Most CSAs are still going strong in their main or Summer season. And quite a few have Fall and/or Winter offerings. But rest assured that all CSA farms are starting to think ahead to the 2017 season.

For some that means regrouping or rethinking what worked, what didn't, what needs changing. For many it means thinking about expanding their reach by adding CSA pickup locations.

If you (or your home, business, workplace, or faith community) would like to host a pickup location for 2017, this would be a good time to assess your location's viability and recruit a critical mass of like-minded folks who would be interested in becoming a member of a CSA.

With some forethought, you can follow up on a recommendation or peruse our
CSA Directory to find a CSA farm that fits your needs and is willing to serve your community. Once you've decided on a CSA farm (or farms) to serve you--remember that several of our members offer non-vegetable CSAs like meat, apples, grains, etc--you can arrange with them to come during the off-season to speak to a group about the benefits of local foods and CSA.

Our website offers lots of resources about CSAs (History, FAQs, Factors to Consider, etc) and more info about how to
Create a CSA Pickup Site. Please check them out and if you have questions or are interested in becoming a host site, email us.

There's a Nip
in the Air
...and that means that the bounty of Fall and Winter CSAs is in your future.

While most of our farmer-members that offer a Meat CSA provide them year-round, the number of farms offering vegetables via Fall shares (Oct-Dec) is fewer, and those offering Winter shares (Jan-Mar) is fewer still.

Fall shares typically morph into more of the hearty root crops, brassicas, and cold-tolerant greens, while Winter shares showcase the farms' creativity with hoop-grown greens, jars of tomatoes, frozen fruits and veggies, and long-storage root crops.

The timing and logistics of some Fall and Winter CSAs might permit you to dovetail with your existing CSA. The list to the right notes with asterisk(s) those farms offering Fall and/or Winter CSA shares, and the link below provides more detail.
Fall & Winter CSAs
So Long, Farewell!

I've met many of you at farmers markets, green fairs, health and wellness events, highlighting local foods and CSAs by way of promoting Band of Farmers. This fledgling coalition of CSA farms is just finishing its second season, and I've been the project coordinator from the start, including over a year of preparation before we went "live."

We were lucky enough to receive a two-year USDA grant that gave us start-up funds and allowed for my part-time, paid position to help get things going while the farmers farmed. That grant--and my position--comes to an end Sept 30.

I may from time to time take on a specific project for the Band, but other tasks, including these newsletters, will be undertaken by Band member volunteers. I've enjoyed getting to know you and the 45 farms that have become members of Band of Farmers!        -- Robin
