Chamber President:
David Clarke

It is that time of the year once again where we hold our Annual General Meeting and reflect on the year just gone and look forward to the forthcoming year ahead.  We always try and make our AGM's as interesting as we possibly can whilst carrying out the important business of reporting to our members and electing our directors and this year is no exception. I am very excited that we will be welcoming Matt Adams, Editor of the Herts Advertiser, to speak at our AGM this year. Matt will share with us the trials and tribulations of being a local newspaper editor and discuss the challenges and opportunities which come with such a publicly prominent role.

The AGM, which is being held at the Abbey Theatre, also provides the Board and I a fantastic opportunity to thank our members for their amazing support during the year just gone and to share with everyone our exciting plans for the rest of 2016 and beyond.

News Release
Boost for business

Businesses have welcomed major work by St Albans City and District Council to make it easier to compete for Council contracts and to use its services.

An online survey was undertaken to test the reaction to steps taken or being considered to make the Council more business friendly.

Of the 35 firms that responded, 88% backed the idea of procurement workshops giving advice on how to bid for contracts.
The Council is holding its first such workshop for small and medium sized businesses next month.

Other findings include 94% approval of an initiative to publicise opportunities for doing business with the Council through the District’s Chamber of Commerce.

Raising Finance
Preparation is key

Vanessa Crawley, a Corporate and Commercial Lawyer at SA Law comments on the ways in which a business can raise finance, and offers considerations for business owners when looking at the available options to them:

At SA Law we’re not afraid to be honest, and I think we all agree that over the last few years the M&A market has been sluggish.  However, we are pleased to report a significant increase in the volume of instructions we’ve received on good sized deals that demonstrate renewed confidence in this previously delicate discipline.

We have also received a noticeable increase in clients requesting advice and assistance on the various ways to raise funds with the intention of growing the business to expand, making strategic acquisitions or maximising potential with a view to a structured exit strategy.

Crowd funding target reached for new playground!

The local community is jumping for joy today as it was announced that the Friends of the Victoria Playing Field (FVPF) had reached their crowdfunding target.

This means that the much needed new playground for the Playing Field will be installed.

Two pledges from local businesses, Waffle House and the local BP garage which is situated next to the playground, meant that the target was hit comfortably.

“We are thrilled to be part of this amazing project in our community. The contributions from the local residents and businesses have been amazing and a great achievement. Myself and the store team are looking forward to seeing how we can continue to be part of the development” said Raj Sarbiaya Store Manager BP St Albans.
