As we draw nearer to the festive break and the turn of the new year, it provides me with an excellent opportunity to reflect on the year just gone at the Chamber and look ahead to what will undoubtedly be a packed and exciting 2016.

2015 saw us embracing new technology with the launch of the new St Albans District Chamber of Commerce App where you can find everything you need to know about the Chamber and our activities and available support in one easily accessible place.

With the 2015 General Election set for May, our members had an opportunity in March to get up close and personal with our local candidates at our hustings event held at the Town Hall, the site which will house the brand new St Albans Museum and Gallery.

In June we embarked on our first ever St Albans Business Festival which saw the Chamber partner with stakeholders comprising media, local government, professional firms and local businesses to showcase the many benefits of doing business right here in our amazing city.

Sickness absence during the Christmas period

The run up to Christmas often brings with it increased demand for products and services from businesses across the UK. Meeting this increased demand can be a challenge, particularly when such businesses may find themselves with a diminishing workforce due to sickness absence.

In managing non-attendance during the festive period, businesses should start by making it clear to employees that their sickness absence policy will apply as normal.  A comprehensively drafted absence policy setting out what is expected of employees, and demonstrating a willingness to implement it where necessary, creates a deterrent which should significantly reduce the amount of dishonest sick leave among employees.

The City Centre Partnership (CCP) will be launching the process to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) for St Albans, built by local businesses for local businesses and managed by local businesses.

The CCP, a business led partnership of the private and public sector, has been formed to ensure that St Albans City builds on its strengths and rises to the challenges of the changing face of British city centres, now and in the future.

The launch will outline the methods in which a BID will play a vital role by concentrating on five key objectives:
  • City centre appearance.
  • Events, festivals and visitor experience.
  • Business support.
  • Marketing and promotion of the city.
  • Local engagement and partnership.

Local Businesses Raise £5,000 for SportsAid

A local business lunch club has raised £5,000 for the charity SportsAid. The charity helps young sports people overcome the financial challenges they face in their bid to become Britain’s next generation of sporting heroes. The charity’s patron is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.

The lunch events take place at OA Sport on Harpenden Road St Albans. They are organised by Rayner Essex Accountants with co-sponsors being Conical, Gallagher and Associates, Sherrards Solicitors, OA Sport and AIB. The events are based around a sit down lunch with guests being entertained by a speaker from the world of sport and typically a cheque hand-over to a gifted young athlete. 

Commenting on the fund raising efforts of the group Rayner Essex Partner Antony Federer said:

“I am delighted to be associated with these events. The format is a winning one whereby people get to enjoy a tasty lunch, meet business contacts and hear from international level sporting stars. Being able to hand over some much needed funding to the next generation of athletes is of course rewarding for all those who attended and made the donation possible."
