Chamber President:
David Clarke

As April comes to a close and the photos contained in the Herts Ad's last addition of the month helps us all remember what happened at our annual St Georges Day lunch, I find myself in a reflective mood. These days there are many ways of keeping track of your business networks and personally I find LinkedIn a really valuable tool to keep up to speed with people’s activities, job changes and career milestones. I am however always surprised when I begin to get inundated with kind congratulatory messages acknowledging my own work anniversaries, and yesterday, travelling back in to Euston on the train, was no exception.

Suddenly my smartphone sprang to life with messages from far and wide congratulating me on my sixth anniversary in my role has Head of Centre at Clydesdale Bank here in St Albans. My immediate reaction was one of surprise as it is quite remarkable to me that six years has passed so quickly. I also appreciate that in the eyes of many who have been involved with the St Albans business community for a considerably longer period of time than I have, I am still considered to be a new boy!

Reach for the Sky with the Maltings St Albans and Boultbee LDN
The Maltings is a premier shopping destination at the heart of St Albans. It has something for everyone and you can be sure to find what you like amongst its diverse mix of shops, restaurants, services and leisure facilities. Whether you are looking for retail therapy, a bite to eat or simply to meet up with friends over a coffee, Maltings has it all.

The Maltings Shopping Centre (owned by Boultbee LDN) has always been very much involved with the St Albans Chamber of Commerce, and this year helped to support the St George's Day fund raising auction by offering attendees the opportunity to bid for a once in a life-time experience; a flight in an iconic WWII Spitfire!

The experience offer for the Spitfire, the most famous British fighter plane of World War II, was extremely popular at the event and managed to raise a whopping £4,400 for the charity Mount Vernon, a well renowned and highly specialised cancer centre.

SA Law is encouraging companies to enter teams of at least four in the half marathon or 5K run to raise as much money as they can for charity.

To increase the competitive edge, the company team with the lowest aggregate score for their combined first four runners home will win a bottle of champagne, winner’s trophy, £250 for the charity of their choice and bragging rights within the business community for the next 12 months.

Leading by example, SA Law has already signed up eight of its own staff to take up the challenge with more showing interest.

EU Referendum:
Have you made your mind up?
UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union to be held on Thursday 23 June.

Big business - with a few exceptions - tends to be in favour of Britain staying in the EU because it makes it easier for them to move money, people and products around the world. BT chairman Sir Mike Rake, a recent CBI president, says there are "no credible alternatives" to staying in the EU. But others disagree, such as Lord Bamford, chairman of JCB, who says an EU exit would allow the UK to negotiate trade deals as our country "rather than being one of 28 nations". Many small and medium-sized firms would welcome a cut in red tape and what they see as petty regulations.

The British Chambers of Commerce says 55% of members back staying in a reformed EU.

At St Michaels Manor Hotel.
£23.00 (+VAT) for all attendees.
