Women's Devotionals
Your Worship Team has a provided devotional booklet for the women in our congregation as our way of saying Happy Mother’s Day!  Woman of God® - Joy in the Journey devotion book explores five women of the Bible: Sarah, Ruth, Deborah, Mary, and Martha. The book looks at their lives and circumstances and draws parallels to our lives, so many years later. And just like then, God is still keeping his promises to us, encouraging us, and loving us. The book has 25 short devotions with a Bible verse and a prayer starter accompanying each one. Interesting, thought-provoking, and quick to read, these devotions will speak to Christian women of all ages. The Worship Team of FCC hopes that you enjoy reading it as we enjoy sharing it with you.   Men of FCC stay tuned…..your day is coming up in June!!!!

The fictional Sherlock Holmes is known for his keen power of observation in solving crimes, but Holmes also used his observation skills in renewing his faith. In The Adventure of the Naval Treaty, Dr. Watson says of Holmes, "He walked past the couch to an open window and held up the drooping stalk of a moss rose, looking down at the dainty blend of crimson and green,” Dr. Watson said it was a new phase of his character, for he had never before seen Holmes show an interest in natural objects.
"There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion." he said. "Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things are necessary for our existence, but this rose is an extra. Its smell and color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives "extras." Life is filled with "extras"-- gifts from a loving God that embellish and enrich our lives. Take time to observe some of them today! ** Life is not a problem to be solved - - but a gift to be enjoyed**
Southeastern District Meeting
Come one, come all!   The Southeast District Meeting will be hosted by our church on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at 7:00 PM.  As some know, this is a meeting of the several churches in the southeast district of our regional church. We are asking that all that can come, do so, to welcome our sister churches.  It will be a pot luck supper for approximately 50 people (furnished by FCC).  So everyone plan to attend and bring enough for you and your family plus extra for a few more people.

Book Club
The First Christian Church Book Club will be meeting at Osteria Cicchetti in Monkey Junction for our May meeting.  Sounds good, doesn't it??  We meet on the 4th Thursday, which is May 28 at 11:45am.  Space is reserved for us and everyone is welcome.  The book we are reading for May is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.  Once again we will be learning of cultures and ways that are different from ours.  All of the books are in the hands of our group members, so please arrange to share if you would like to read this book.

Prayer List Update
If you have a prayer concern for a family member, friend, colleague, or yourself, please fill out the prayer request card found in the pews or notify the minister or church office.  Non-dated prayer concerns will be removed from the prayer list after two months if not updated or requested otherwise. We want to make sure that the list does not overlook a concern and remains up to date.  Also, you can enter prayer requests through our website here. The Communications Ministry Team

Mallory Magelli Ordination Update

Greetings FCC Wilmington! I hope this finds you all well. It is with joy in my heart that I announce that I will be ordained into Christian Ministry by the North Carolina Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on July 11, 2015 at Camp Caroline in Arapahoe, NC at 11AM. You all have been a large part of my journey to this place in my life, for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You all taught me to be a leader by giving me my first opportunities to learn church leadership—beginning with lay reading as early as middle school, a deacon in high school, serving on committees, opportunities to serve the region, and serve at the communion table in high school and college! It is from the lessons and opportunities here that I continue to grow into the minister I hope to be, and I pray that you all will join me on this momentous occasion if you are able. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. My email address is

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Calling all knitters, crocheters, yarn collectors, and prayer warriors.  Cathy Hill is very interested in starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Christian.  So if you love working with yarn and want to contribute your time and talents in this area, please call Cathy for more details (910-470-2719).  She has the patterns and ideas about how to start the ministry and how to give the shawls to those who would greatly benefit from this gift.

SWATT Team Update

Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:
Thursday, June 4.  Games and Cards with a Pot Luck lunch.  We will meet at the church at 10:00am in the morning for cards and games until lunch is served at Noon.  If you have cards or a favorite game, please bring them.  Don’t say “I don’t know how to play anything” because there will be games that anyone can play.  So, bring your favorite dish and your spirit of adventure and join the fun.  Make your reservation with Phyllis, 910-395-1400, by Sunday, May 31.  We will also need card tables, so let Phyllis know if you have a table you can bring to the church.
Thursday, July 2. Lunch at Osteria Cicchetti (The OC).  In July we will eat at The OC located at 5104 College Road in Monkey Junction (formerly O’Charley's ) for delicious Italian food.  Make your reservation with Phyllis 910-395-1400 by Sunday, June 29.  To ride the bus or car pool meet at the church at 11:15am.

The August 15, 2015 Duplin Winery Trip will have to be cancelled.  Unfortunately the "Golden Oldies" show at the Winery has already been sold out.

We are so excited to announce that we have expanded our recycling program to include ALL recycling!
You will see this recycling sign around the church and on the new recycling containers. If you can recycle it at home, we can recycle it here!
It is important for us, as stewards of our planet, to have this program at our place of worship.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the church office.
Children's Worship & Wonder News
Did you grow up going to church and Sunday school; and yet, do you feel like you don’t know or understand the Bible?  Are you new to the church and wish you could learn more about the Bible?  Do you know the meaning behind the liturgical colors: white, green, purple and red?  Do you know what seasons these colors are used?  When you read the stories, do you make the connection to your own life? If you answered yes to any of these questions then Children Worship and Wonder may be able to help you!
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has the best way to teach our children about the Bible. Our national staff is teaching this method to other denominations because it is so successful.  In all my years (40) involved in Christian Education, I have never been involved in anything so successful.  The Bible stories come alive using wooden pieces, felt and on occasion, even sand.  Children see, touch and hear the stories using all their senses.  They are invited to respond to the stories by answering wondering questions, through art, and other creative items, like play dough.
Recently, I was telling the story of the Good Shepherd and the Wolf.  When I asked the wondering question; “I wonder if these sheep have names,”  a second grade boy said, “Yes!  This one is me, and this one is you.” He continued to point to everyone in the class.  At the age of seven, he got the story!!
On another occasion, during response time, I overheard two girls retelling the story of Jesus’ baptism.  They followed the story cards and retold the story.  Then they added their own words.  Holding up a child figure one said, “I want to see God!”  An adult figure responded, “Stand on the hill and you will see him.”  Moments like these take my breath away.
By the time these children are in the fifth or sixth grade they will have heard the Bible stories from the Genesis to the resurrection over and over. The children will grasp the overarching themes of the Bible. As they grow in knowledge, their understanding of the stories will grow and change.
In addition to the Bible stories, the children learn about the sacredness of worship.  We take off our shoes before we enter the room because it is holy ground. The Christ candle is lit to remind us that Jesus is with us as we read the scripture.  A feast is shared and the children tell us about their week.
As the seasons change we explain why the colors are changing.  Several years ago, in Ashland, Pentecost fell on Mother’s Day.  During the children’s sermon I asked what special day this was fully expecting the children to say Mother’s Day.  To my surprise the children yelled, “It’s Pentecost!  The church’s birthday!”  As I looked at the congregation I smiled and said, “I knew you were going to say Pentecost.”
I could go on and on with stories of God’s work through this program.  What we need is your help to keep the program going. Children’s Worship and Wonder is held during the 8:45 service.  Each Sunday we use two people, a story teller and a greeter.  If we could get between 6 or 8 of each, we would only need to do Children Worship and Wonder every 6 to 8 weeks. Please consider giving the gift of your time. Not only will you help pass the heritage of our faith to the next generation, but you will grow in your own faith.
Join Elizabeth Franz and me in learning the stories and seeing little miracles happen before your very eyes.  Please join us one Sunday to see for yourself how Children Worship and Wonder works.
Grace and Peace, Kathy Reinger
SAVE THE DATE: June 9 & 10 at 6:30pm we will have a training for greeters and story tellers.
