Welcome to Season 2016!

With the first regatta of the 2016 season less than three weeks away, it's time to update you all on what has been happening down at the shed.

We've had crews rowing interstate and we currently have crews in Penrith for the Nationals. We've done a big recruitment drive to kick off the season, and a certain Life Member was awarded an Order of Australia Medal.

2016 Nationals Campaign Update
 

Fourteen UWABC athletes are getting ready for the 2016 Australian National Championships. The regatta runs from the 14th of March through to 20th of March. After a long summer training period the club has a very competitive squad heading over to Penrith.

Twelve UWABC athletes will be representing the state at the Kings and Queens Cup Interstate Regatta from 11am on Sunday 20th of March (Its being live streamed on the Rowing Australia Website (or on the big screen at the UWA Boat Club). Craig James OAM 

On Australia Day 2016, UWA Boat Club Life Member Craig James received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his long time service to Sport and Rowing in WA.

Craig is a current Director on the Rowing WA board and was President of Rowing WA for many years. He joined UWABC in 1969 and has held the titles of President, Secretary and Captain of the club.

A Life Member of both Rowing WA and UWABC, Craig is the Council Member for Western Australia on the Rowing Australia Council and was a Boat Race Official at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

In addition to his services to rowing, Craig has been Deputy President of Western Australia Sports Federation (1995-2008) and received the John Graham Award for Exceptional Service, Department of Sport and Recreation Western Australia in 2011.

The Boat Club sincerely congratulates Craig for this well-deserved honour.

UWABC at the Head of the Yarra 2015

On the 24th of November 2015, past and present UWABC members took part in the Australian Rowing Classic: The Head of the Yarra.

A composite Masters D grade Eight consisting of Rowing WA masters and UWABC members Andrew Brown and Alex Harrison (stroke) came 6th (out of 21 crews).

Another crew consisting of past UWABC members rowed in the G grade Masters division (aged 60-70 years old). They were the fastest G grade Men’s Masters crew, placing 5th out of 14 combined F&G grade crews. The crew consisted of: Cox  Helen Mc Manamny, Stroke Patrick Dawkins, 7  Steve Kennedy, 6 Chris Davis, 5 Simon Dawkins, 4 John Sheldrick, 3 Tom Atkinson, 2 Dick Sudlow and Bow Tom Langley.

Finally UWABC member Hugh Cook, aged 85, competed with “The Ancient Mariners” crew.

The Club would like to congratulate all the UWABC members who completed in this prestigious race!

2016 Season Opener 

On Friday the 26th of February the Boat Club took part in the UWA O Day to officially kick start our recruitment drive for the 2016 season!

The day was very successful with a total of 130 people signing up! The following Sunday we hosted our Season Opener for all the new recruits which was also successful and shows that club will have great numbers coming into the new season.

Matilda the Matilda Bay Shark

In the last week Matilda Bay has become the home of a new (but small) sandbar shark!
