Howard County Sugary Drink Bill

When County Executive Allan Kittleman took office, one of the first actions he took was to reverse the Sugar Ban that former Executive Ulman put in place.  Many citizens of Howard County cheered this reversal and let him know how pleased they were.
Now he needs all our help! Councilman Calvin Ball has put a bill together requiring that healthy food and beverage options be provided on County property; this is even more egregious than the one Ken Ulman did.
This bill exempts all the NON-PROFITS (where most of the kids/children activities would happen on county property).
Attached are a copy of the bill and some talking points that could be used in testimony.
We have been asked to get a few people lined up that would testify against the bill; specifically:
  • Behavior cannot be legislated
  • Childhood obesity is a problem but education, not legislation is the road
  • There is no data to support that requiring healthy foods/beverages in vending machines equates to healthier people.
The county executive's office will have fiscal impact numbers on the county and other data; they are also working on getting a member of the chamber to testify and have the vending machine lobbying group to testify.
The public hearing is on Monday, May 18 at 6:30 pm (earlier that usual).  In the George Howard Building, 3430 Courthouse Drive, EC in the Banneker Room.
So, we need your help.....
    1) testify against this bill in a professional manner
    2) fill the room in opposition to the bill
Please let Loretta know if you will be testifying, so she can let the County Executive's office know.

Are you talking to Brick Walls?

Let's face it—MOST people hate politics!

Even a bunch of us who are involved in politics hate it! Last year there were mom's in the neighborhood who would turn the other way when they saw me.  Then I attended a talk last year with Tea Party Patriots and realized what I was doing wrong.  I was using the wrong words to talk about the issues.

The Democrats have been studying word usage for years and have had that as an advantage, but no longer!  Tea Party Patriots have done their own studies and they are here to share that knowledge with us.  On May 30th please join MDCAN as we learn about the Language of Liberty.  We will learn what words will elicit positive and negative emotional responses.

Our goal is to have conversations with people and win them over to our side, correct?  Come find out how to make that happen!  This will be a participatory workshop so bring your thinking caps.
