A Funny Program about Funny Programs

Join us online on Friday November 27th at 6 pm for a presentation by author Martin Gitlin, based on his book The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time. Marty is the the only author to have actually ranked the greatest sitcoms ever (the top six: SeinfeldAll in the FamilyM*A*S*HI Love LucyThe Mary Tyler Moore ShowCheers) based on wide-ranging criteria. 
This presentation will be a blast! Marty will show really funny snippets of sitcoms chronologically, from I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show to Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory, and explain how they have evolved over the years in relevance, content, and humor. He will engage and challenge patrons with sitcom trivia, and will  impart a lot of information about sitcom history. Most of all, this will be fun!

The MV Haiku Club will meet monthly through December, led by author and teacher Caroline Joy Adams. Each session will have a specific theme, and participants will receive a helpful, explanatory PDF file ahead of time with suggested reading and writing assignments for the week’s meeting. The theme for this session will be Haiku as Tribute: Theme – Appreciation.

Professor Philip Weinstein's six part seminar on the works of Toni Morrison will conclude on Wednesday, December 2nd at 5:30 pm, with a discussion of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Beloved." Philip M. Weinstein is Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor of English Emeritus at Swarthmore College. He has been offering literary seminars in cooperation with the Vineyard Haven Public Library since 2012. 

This year's seminar has been sponsored by Vineyard Haven Public Library Building Fund, Inc. (VHPLBFI), a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the library building. VHPLBFI is undertaking a capital campaign to support the addition of a multipurpose meeting space at the library, without the use of taxpayer funding. This weekend on November 14–15, the Boston Book Festival is teaming up with Massachusetts Center for the Book for a bonanza weekend of local literature, featuring authors from across the Commonwealth, in all genres, introducing readers to their latest books in a fast-paced series of bite-sized videos.

Register just once and you'll be all set to attend all three sessions: 
Fiction and Poetry: 1pm Saturday 11/14
Books for Young Readers: 3pm Saturday 11/14
Nonfiction and Memoir: 1pm Sunday 11/15

Backyard Book Browsing

On Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon, library patrons are invited to browse and checkout a selection of new books outdoors in the courtyard behind the library (weather permitting). No appointment is needed, but it's a good idea to call and confirm since our schedule for outdoor events is subject to change. (If you are looking for a particular item, please call the library to arrange for pickup during our scheduled daily pickup hours.) 

Entry is by the path behind the building from Greenwood Avenue. For everyone's safety and in keeping with state and local guidelines, participants are required to wear a mask, sanitize hands prior to browsing, practice social distancing, and limit handling of books they do not intend to check out. Browsing may be limited to 15 minutes per person.

Weekly Children's Programs
Each week our Youth Services librarians create "Take & Make" bags filled with themed educational activities. Virtual Storytime and video tutorials on our Facebook and YouTube pages enhance the Take & Make bag activities. Bags are available for pickup weekly on Sundays from 3pm - 5pm (on a first come basis while supplies last). For more information, contact Emily our Children's Librarian! Teen "Take & Make" craft bags are also available weekly, Young Adult Librarian Jennifer can provide the details!

For program announcements follow our Kids & Young Adults Facebook Page, and check out our new YouTube channel. Books are now available from the library through contactless pickup, and eBooks are available through our digital library resources for kids.
