WINTER 2016 NEWSLETTER

2016 is off to a busy start and this newsletter is filled with stories of what we've been up to.

We are settling into our new offices at Central United Methodist Church, 1011 2nd St. in downtown Muskegon, the same building that houses Kid’s Food Basket.  We are excited to be more accessible to our learners, partners and volunteers. Our office is now open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 10-2 and other hours by appointment.  Please feel free to stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.

Our staff and volunteers are working hard to serve more low-literacy adults and their families.  In 2015, we provided over 4000 contact hours of instruction, reaching almost 250 adults.  2016 will find us exploring new ways to provide accessible literacy programs while we continue to support and strengthen those we currently offer.

As always, we are grateful for everyone who is a part of helping us to create a more literate Muskegon County.

For over a year, Read Muskegon has been providing weekly literacy classes for participants at EXIT (Empowering Ex-Offenders in Transition), a jail re-entry program for felony convicted fathers.  Each month, Read Muskegon hosts a Family Literacy Dinner for the participants, their children and extended family members, as part of our mission to break the cycle of illiteracy.

The Gift of Literacy

In mid-December, we hosted our 2nd Annual Holiday Literacy Village for families involved in Read Muskegon programs, enrolled in local Head Starts or participating in other parent support programs. Parents and children made their way through nine stations, each focused on fun ways to build early literacy skills. Before heading home, each child was able to select several books to keep and each parent was provided with a literacy resource bag. Thank you to all of those who helped make this event possible including our many individual donors. And a big thanks to the Whitehall High School NHS students who got up bright and early on a Saturday morning to volunteer! The gift of literacy is one that will last a lifetime.
