Weekly College Update

Dear Senior Bulldogs, Thunderbirds, Huskies, and Snow Leopards,

As we move into the last couple of weeks of the school year, you might be considering how you can best spend the summer before you start college. I have a few suggestions, if you don’t already have a plan.

This week’s focus is maximizing your summer.

There is a lot you can do over this summer to make sure you’re prepared to have a successful start to your college career. Here are a few ideas:

• Take a class at a local community college

  • Not only will this help you keep your study skills sharp for your classes in the fall, but you might be able to earn credits toward your degree as well. Use the ASSIST website to look up the community college where you want to take classes and see which of their courses transfer to credits toward 4 year degrees.

• Get a summer job

  • You can earn valuable money that helps you pay for books, food, travel, and other personal expenses in the fall. Plus the work experience is good practice if you plan to do a work study program next year.

• Keep applying for scholarships

  • Scholarship deadlines won’t end just because the school year is over. There are scholarships that you can apply for all year round. Check out this list of over 100 scholarships with July deadlines to get started.

• Read

  • The literacy demands in college are huge. No matter what your major is, you are likely to be assigned several hours of reading per week. Just like anything else, the more you practice reading, the more your comprehension, vocabulary, and pace will improve. So check out your local library or get online and find some good reads!
