4 January 2022

Dear CFJ supporter,

It’s the start of a new year – and at Cause for Justice, we are excited to meet the challenge of advancing healthy family values and upholding the best interest of children. We know that a stable and strong family unit is the cornerstone of flourishing communities and society: that is why we will continue to work diligently to promote the well-being of your family and children in 2022.

Do you also have heart for society’s most vulnerable members? We certainly do! In 2022, we look forward to taking up our collective responsibility to, and play our part, in defending their cause.

As we head into 2022, we invite you to take a look at what you helped us achieve in 2021. We could not have advanced any of these worthy causes without your support. In these challenging times, we need your support more than ever – to keep doing the important and impactful work we do.

If you agree that healthy families and child protection are important, please support this cause: your contribution will make a real difference in the real lives of real people in 2022.

LOOKING BACK IN THANKFULNESS

Defending and advancing the freedoms and well-being of families and children is our privilege, and we are grateful for opportunities to take action to make a difference. During the second half of 2021, we continued to engage in various causes focusing on protecting and promoting the constitutional rights, freedoms and best interests of families, parents and children. These include:
  • Hosting a Values-based Sexuality Education Expo.
  • Taking action against violence against women and children.
  • Taking hands to protect children from abuse and exploitation.
  • Launching a new virtual #ParentTalk course (to equip parents to protect their children from the harmful impact of pornography).
  • Participating in child law and policy reform.
Read more about these exciting developments below!

VALUES-BASED SEXUALITY EDUCATION EXPO
As our children develop towards sexual maturity, we need to ensure that they know how to express and channel their growing sexual awareness in a healthy way.

To raise awareness about the beneficial impact of values-based programmes, how to implement one in the classroom, as well as the unwanted impact of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), Cause for Justice hosted a Values-based Sexuality Education Expo during September 2021. We made parents, teachers and child protection stakeholders aware of the ideological prejudices implicit in CSE as well as the availability of values-based sexuality education programmes that can be used as alternatives.

Learn more about specific values-based programmes and how to implement one in your school, by watching this series of five videos – starting with this presentation by Mr Burt Ronald of the ‘Tomorrow’s Leaders in Training’ programme.

Take a deeper dive into the issues surrounding CSE, by watching our informative and eye-opening panel discussion (a five-video series) – starting with this session by Cause for Justice Executive Director and Legal Counsel, Ryan Smit.

Together we can ensure our children receive the best education to prepare them for life! Read more about this important topic in our Expo blog!

TAKING ACTION AGAINST
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN
This year, Cause for Justice supported the global 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, by focusing on the importance of raising our children with values that say loud and clear: no form of abuse is acceptable!

Ending GBV starts at home: healthy families provide children with the best opportunity to grow into healthy adults who contribute to creating and sustaining healthy communities. That is why we need to teach our children healthy values about sex, and gender relationships – it’s the first line of defence!

TAKING HANDS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM
ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION
The abuse and exploitation of children is an unacceptable injustice. Due to its magnitude, it can only be addressed by working together.

At Cause for Justice, we invest in strategic relationships in the child protection and anti-child exploitation sector. We continuously engage fellow child protection stakeholders, including attending and contributing to governmental and key civil society child protection forums and child rights coalition.

Relationships such as these, for example, enabled us to participate in a four-day training workshop on child trafficking and exploitation (hosted by the Child Protection Directorate of the Department of Social Development in December 2021) – including being invited to give a presentation on ‘porn-proofing’ children’s spaces (which was very well received).

#PARENTTALK: THE UNSPOKEN EPIDEMIC
The global Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated another epidemic – an ‘unspoken epidemic’: children and pornography. But there is hope! The Centre Against Sexual Exploitation, South Africa (CASE-SA) has stepped up and produced the virtual #ParentTalk course. Now parents and caregivers can be educated and empowered to protect children in their care appropriately in this digital age.

In addition to great additional resources and informative and helpful blogs/vlogs, the #ParentTalk course includes four core training modules consisting of 90 minutes of interviews, that cover important topics such as:
  • The prevalence and harms of pornography exposure.
  • The impact of pornography on the developing child brain.
  • Equipping parents to prepare children for exposure (and how to recover from its effects).
  • Using technological resources to safeguard children.
Get involved without delay – help protect our children today: * CASE-SA in an initiative of Cause for Justice.*

CHILD LAW AND POLICY
Cause for Justice is committed to ensuring that South African law protects and promotes the best interest of children. That is why we participate in the law and policy reforms that affect children – like the amendment of the Children’s Act.

We have made submissions focusing on the importance of introducing a legal duty to protect children from harmful content, in the Act. This will ensure the law protects children effectively against the harmful impact of exposure to explicit sexual and violent material.
