Canmore Real Estate Newsletter December 2018

As we move through December, we are excited with days on the ski hills, cross country skiing and getting out skating on the local ponds. Canmore and Banff are beautiful this time of year for locals and tourists alike.
Our market is continuing to be quite strong with some market segments having multiple offers and others slowing down to more of a balanced market.  Our listing inventory has been quite consistent since before summer and looks to stay that way moving into the new year.

Although you will see the average and median sale prices increase in November this is amore a function of the small sample size and higher priced properties selling that month.
We are looking forward to breaking down the entire year next month with all the comparative numbers.

We want to thank everyone who helped out and donated to our 27th annual Royal LePage Food Bank drive earlier this month, it was another great success.  If you still wish to donate, please let us know.

Have a fantastic holiday season and thank you for all you support!

Lastly, we are here to help you or anyone you know for all your real estate.  We are never too busy for your referrals.

2018 Hawker update
Joanna, Callum, Lauren and I got to spend some fabulous winter time together having several days in Golden BC last Winter, not the booming metropolis of Canmore, but very special none the less. We were able to stay at a friendly B n B (our friend MF’s  B n B was booked) for 3 nights which was a super get away. We enjoyed many of the excellent dining experiences that Golden offers and they were fabulous, MF used her expert knowledge of Kicking Horse to give us a superb ski day. Especially great was her ability to arrange for 20cms of fresh Pow the night before.  MF and Tim joined us for dinner on night 2 which was entertaining and fun. The next day we rented sleds (going back to youth) and went 45mins towards Rogers Pass where we spent the day having so much fun pounding the powder, I was in awe of the power of these new sleds, so much more powerful than the sleds I raced in Quebec during my late teens.  I was thankful to spend this concentrated time with those that I hold in such high regard, loved our time together!!
Through last Winter my knee continued to feel better from my big incident in 2016, I was able to ski harder and longer and some back to back days which I hope will be more numerous this Winter. So thankful!!  Joanna was elected to the Board of Directors of the Calgary Real Estate Board, she is so capable, they are lucky to have someone who knows so much about all the different aspects of the Board through her amazing committee contributions over the decades.  If they play their cards right Joanna will be there for several years to come to continue her dedication to the industry she loves.
Cal was playing competitive Basketball in Calgary, his 1st Winter where he was not skiing competitively. Cal loves bball and played with some fabulous players and like skiing he spent many hours practicing and learning his craft.  With some of our new found Winter time given no skiing racing, Cal and I had many days skiing together for fun at Lake Louise and then a fabulous road trip to Red Mountain in late Winter and stayed with a dear friend Erik Kalacis.  In Feb Cal and I were invited to go Cat Skiing at Fortress Mtn., it was Father son ski day with the sons all being present ski racers or recently retired ones and boy can they rip. We were in a huge weather cycle for the week proceeding our Cat skiing date.  They had 50cms over the Saturday and it kept snowing another 80cms over the next few days. We skied Wednesday, they had not had any guests since the Sat so we had the lucky privilege to shred 14 untracked runs with 80 cms of fresh Pow.  What an amazing day that was, thank you Cam!  Great to spend more one on one time with Cal like when he was younger.  Lauren came home from St FX University and Jo, Cal and Lauren had a fun but cold Family ski day at Lake Louise on Family day, I loved it!
Jo and I went to Palm Dessert to celebrate Jan and Clair’s wedding anniversary and that was a fabulous time with Corinne and her family, superbly great weather, amazing food and some mandatory shopping.
I was able to Visit with a long time friend in Invermere for a few days.  Peter Magee and I paddled / floated from Invermere to Radium on a cloudless warm day in May, I brought my mtn and road bike and did both the next day and finished up with a swim at Athelmere beach like old days.  It was great to spend time with Peter and Ann.
Lauren came home from University with some extra baggage this April 😉 her boyfriend Jake moved into his Canmore Aunt and Uncle’s home for the Summer so we got to know Jake even more and I starting to tolerate him more now 😉 – we had some fun mtn biking this Summer in Canmore and more time on my road bike.  Lauren worked at the Blue Moon women’s clothing store in Canmore, Jake was a server at the Iron Goat and Cal worked at Build a Bear in YYC as well as the Lake on several contracts he was able to secure and both Lauren and Callum worked around the office as well which was a great help,
Both children were able to spend time at the Lake with Jo and I this Summer which was great, Cal honed his culinary skills with Jo’s new cook book as did Jo and I.  It is so great to have more time to create and dine like we do in the Summer.  My knee was able to progress even more this past Summer with more yoga, (thank you Cathy, Rhonda, Jo and the Ashram) My water skiing got back on track as well, so thankful for all that!!!! Time at the Lake was filled with projects and time with long time friends, we are very blessed to have that constant in our lives.  Jo, Cal, Lauren and I were all around for the swimming regatta and went in the family relay which was fabulous fun.  Jo was a real trooper!!  The Summer started with no power, a tree knocked out the power for the 1st 2 weeks I was at the cottage making it a little more challenging especially with the closing of the Station (our store that is on the Lake that has serviced us for my entire life).
It has been a busy year for Drew and I at work for most of the year, a very strong 1st 3 quarters but it has been slower since the smoke from the BC and California wild fires and then when the smoke subsided we had an onslaught of unseasonably cold and wet / snowy Fall which did not help sales at all.  Drew and I are so thankful to all our clients and friends for the support that allowed us to in the Top 1% of all 18,300 Royal LePage Realtors Nationally for 2018, we were 155. We also have added several fabulous Realtors to our office which is showing us new insights on how we can all be better at what we do.
Mum and Dad continued to enjoy the Bow River Lodge in Canmore but Dad has endured several falls this year, fortunately no broken bones nor internal bleeding and Mum not to be out done has also had a few ambulance trips to emerg but nothing too serious thankfully for them both.  We continue to marvel at them but it appears to be time for a new level of care for them so it appears they will be moving into a home in Calgary.  At least Barb and Janet will be near them but it will be hard for them to leave Canmore where they have called home for the last 22 years.
Jo and I had a visit to Vancouver for some music and we saw Paul Simon in concert as well, Jo loves her music!
Cal was at the National Sports school for grade 12, so good he was able to keep going at the his school even with retiring from ski racing, he marks went up again like they did in the Grade eleven, just like his Dad 😉 .  He was accepted into several Commerce programs and chose the Co-op Commerce program at Dalhousie and having now visited him twice since Sept there, most recently the 1st week of December he seems to have found a great balance of University social life and fun, school work and intramural sports.  Cal rooms with one if his great ski friends Thomas Sangwine at Dal.  Jo and I were in Halifax for our Royal LePage Conference and we arranged to pick Callum and Lauren up and do the Cabot Trail which I had not done since I was 9 or 10, what a treat it was for us, so see the coast, sea shore and do some hiking all with Milo who is at St Fx with Lauren this year.  The highlight this year for me was the St FX Xring celebration the 1st week of December, Jo and I were able to start our trip with a Dinner with Cal before he started his exams on Sunday night and then to spend Dec 3rd with Lauren, Jake and her roommates and experience the Xring celebration at St FX was truly extraordinary, I said to Jo that I wish I went to St FX for my University.  Thank you for all the support and friendship and for helping to make 2018 another year I can be very thankful for.  Have an amazing Holiday Season!!
Season’s Greetings from Drew Betts

2018 was another fun year, and it has flown by.   Cheryl and I and of course the kids enjoyed a great summer holiday including time in Orlando along with a week on a cruise ship enjoying some warm weather, loads of fun and fantastic family time together.

Asher moved to Lawrence Grassi Middle School and loves everything about it.  Asher’s love of soccer expanded this year as he had another fantastic season with the Canmore Avalanche team.  He loves playing keeper and enjoyed helping the team to championships this year in league and tournament play.  Asher continued to enjoy downhill skiing last year and is looking forward to another year on the slopes.  Asher continues to play hockey and is now in PeeWee which he continues to enjoy with all his friends.

Hannah continues to love and excel in competitive all star cheerleading.  She lives for competing with her teams (and often winning) at competitions throughout Alberta and BC. This season they are also heading back to compete in Las Vegas!  We were actually just up in Edmonton and both her teams took home the first place banners.  She is also continuing to work hard and succeed in school.

Over the past year I have had to get used to having to look up to Brendan as he is now noticeably taller than I am.  Brendan is excelling in grade 11 including winning multiple scholastic and sports performance awards along with earning the right to take a science course at the U of C never before offered to a student that was not in grade 12.  Although he is no longer playing hockey, he is still reffing hockey which helps pay the bills for gas as he is now a full time legal driver.

Cheryl and I are as busy as ever with three very active kids.  Cheryl is still working full time as an Ultrasound technician and runs Hannah to her practices most nights of the week.  I have also spent some time this past year continuing my support of the Royal LePage Women’s Shelter along with being an assistant coach of Asher’s hockey team and most recently enjoyed helping with the Royal LePage Food Drive (in its 27th year!)

Thanks to everyone for all your support.  I wish you all a healthy, fun and prosperous 2019
