Supporting the work of the Social Adventist Centre

In line with Christ Church’s efforts towards sustainability, and in particular with regard to the reuse of second-hand items, you may be interested in the following initiatives of the Social Adventist Centre located near Christ Church at Avenue Edouard Dapples 2 bis, Lausanne.

The Centre willingly accepts second-hand clothes, provided they are in excellent condition. Funds made from the resale of clothes go towards their food bank for low-income families.

Toys in good condition are also collected by the Centre once a year in December, at their premises, where toys can be deposited.

Lastly, the Centre would be very happy to have some additional volunteers to help out at its premises, and not necessarily on a basis which is demanding in terms of commitment. One day per month, for example, would be helpful.

I shall be posting additional information on the services of the Centre at the back of Church over the next few weeks. If anyone is interested in contributing to its efforts, contact numbers will be made available with the information displayed.  We have a collection trolley available in church to donate to the food bank, and for other donations, please do that directly at their location.

Message from Revd Christine

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I have recently been more than usually aware of the challenges that we face in our everyday lives. Whether we are parenting, facing illness or advancing years, working in a demanding job, making our retirement a positive and fruitful time, trying to find quality time with partners, or seeking work and a safe future, life can be more than challenging as we juggle with all of these things and try to find a place of balance where we can live faithful, prayerful and active Christian lives.

I have no easy recipe for this, I’m afraid!  Perhaps the Church of England’s initiative entitled “Setting God’s People Free”, which exists to enable all the people of God to live out the Good News of Jesus confidently in all of life, Sunday to Saturday, will help us. The Church has, of course, always sought to do exactly that, and we are sent out to love and serve the Lord at the end of every Sunday Eucharist. The Eucharist, or Holy Communion service, equips us for this purpose. The Eucharist is fundamental to our lives of faith from Sunday to Saturday, but the Church explores complementary ways of helping us. Switzerland has been chosen to be a pilot group in this “Setting God’s People Free” initiative so you will be hearing more about it when the working group gets together at a later date.

What might be helpful now? In a day of continual activity and demands at home or at work, can we raise our eyes to focus on God for a moment to call to mind our own experience of faith? Scripture study, articles of faith, recipes for faith and mission, and complicated theological arguments are all lacking until they touch our hearts and minds. It’s only then that they can become an experience in which God touches our hearts, or Jesus sits beside us, or the Spirit lifts our heart and brings everything alive to us. Fundamentally, we live out our faith through the experience of relationship. Just as God lives out His life in the relationship of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we experience God in our relationship with God and with each other. This is how Christ is born in us and how our hearts are set on fire with love for God. Faith is an affair of the mind and serous thinking, but faith is also about the heart.

During our busy days, can we lift our hearts to the Lord for even a brief moment or perhaps at the beginning and the end of the day to contemplate on the affairs of the human heart? I do believe that it is in the depths of our hearts that we encounter God.

In his letter to the Ephesians, chapter one, Paul tells us about Christ: about his death and resurrection, and how through him we share in the riches of his grace with all the saints. He writes about the power of Christ and of his authority over all powers, now and in eternity. But Paul doesn’t simply tell us what to believe: he also prays for us “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you.”

This seems to me to be a pretty good prayer for us during this time of Lent.
