Dear Christ Church friends,

Have you been as shocked as I have by what I have heard several times in the media, that this year Christmas may ‘have to be cancelled’? Different it may be, but how can it be cancelled?

As we look ahead to the weeks to come, which many of us will be spending largely indoors, you might like to lay in some helpful reading matter. I have done just that. There is still time to order books before Advent begins on 29 November.

I have some suggestions, all of which encourage us to trust God and live in hope, during these difficult times.

One book I have recently ordered – inspired by our chaplain Christine – is ‘Lighted Windows’ by Margaret Silf (BRF) which is subtitled ‘An Advent calendar for a world in waiting.’ As we prepare to welcome the Christ child, this offers us an invitation to look through windows, not as grubby panes of glass, but as lighted windows that reflect God’s guidance and his call to trust. We wait in hopefulness, meditating on familiar Scripture which we are encouraged to link to our own daily lives.

Another book for Advent, recently produced, helps us navigate these times of coronavirus in a gentle way: ‘At Home in Advent’ by Gordon Giles (BRF). Within are daily thoughts, questions, activities and prayers.

Or perhaps you would like a theological reflection on this global pandemic? ‘God and the Pandemic’ by Tom Wright (SPCK) offers a hopeful Christian perspective, helping the reader think through the pitfalls of conspiracy theory, God’s judgement, blame, or the end times.

There are other short books on this subject, for example ‘Where is God in a coronavirus world?’ by John Lennox (the goodbook company). Just follow the leads on the book-ordering sites.

We can all do with spiritual reinforcement and the discipline of daily prayer. Advent, coupled with time indoors, is surely an ideal time to get ourselves straight.

Stay safe!

‘We dare to pray, not because we are at our wits end,
But because you are at the center of our life.
Our hope is in no other save in thee alone!
So hear, heal, save, restore! Be the God you have promised to be. Amen’
