Message from Revd Christine

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are all looking forward to supporting our confirmation candidates this coming Sunday, 19 January, as they confirm their faith in Jesus and receive Holy Communion for the first time. This is a big day for the six youngsters and three adults to be confirmed, and indeed it is a big day for their families and friends and for us all. It will also be a great joy to have our Diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Dr Robert Innes, with us, and to also welcome the Right Reverend Bishop Harald Rein, Old Catholic Bishop in Switzerland.

These great occasions powerfully remind us that we are part of a wider Church. We are part of the Church of England as the Diocese in Europe, and part of the world-wide Anglican Communion. We are also in complete communion with the Old Catholic Church, which is why we want to show a visible sign of our communion at this service.

There are a lot of people involved in this service! The candidates are supported by the children of the Sunday Club and by all of us. Many of you are involved in cooking, baking, preparing the Church pews and the altar, and the readings. There are welcomers, collection counters, parents chauffeuring children to rehearsal and some who may be unable to come, praying for us all from your homes.

It seems to me that together we have addressed all of our stewardship aims in one go!

  • Increasing ministries in all areas of Church life.
  • Developing the community as we celebrate our diversity.
  • Encouraging children’s ministries.
  • Developing our outreach.

We can feel encouraged by this. All these areas of ministry will continue to be prayed over and acted upon as we start to really consider how to ensure the continuity of the life, ministry and witness of Christ Church for the long term.

We can of course exhaust ourselves by doing too many things, but at the heart it is not about how much we do, but who we are as God’s beloved, and who we are as a unique fellowship of Christian people. It is about encountering the reality of God’s presence in and through the life of the Church – in its worship, its prayerfulness, its study, its service, its witness. The encounter with the living Lord is what enables us to live our lives from Sunday to Sunday in our work, in our families, in our relationships and in our decision-making.
