The student ambassadors met with Superintendent Bret Towne over a Zoom meeting to discuss obstacles that have been encountered, especially amid this pandemic; what he has accomplished for the school district during his time; and what his goals are for the district. He elaborated on the effects that COVID-19 has had on students, faculty, and education. He describes how during this challenging time, Edmond Public Schools is working to enhance and improve the online education learning system to properly provide students with a flexible alternative to in-person learning. Further, he discussed how this crisis has had a negative impact on many families throughout the district; therefore, EPS has implemented multiple initiatives such as mental health support by providing students with counselors to help with any of their needs.
Over the course of his career as Superintendent, he has worked to aid in the facilitation of the highest level of academic excellence through additional teacher education, hiring more teachers and support staff, and providing a safe place for students to learn. Through his actions, the district has become one of the best schools in the state of Oklahoma, and its’ students are set on the path for success.
Superintendent Towne looks forward to implementing a good online platform for students to learn long-term. He also hopes to establish an ROTC program for high school students interested in that career path. His primary goal for the district is to teach students so that they can excel, even after graduation.
As Superintendent Towne has announced his retirement after the 2020-21 school year, he is excited to meeting the new Superintendent of EPS, who is expected to be announced by this coming March. He looks forward to preparing the new superintendent and seeing everything that the district accomplishes in the coming years.
The Student Ambassadors have also been hard at work! The PR and marketing committee works on this monthly newsletter, the volunteer committee recently held a food drive to benefit schools in the district and read books virtually for EPS elementary schools. The fundraising committee has been raising funds and collecting items for the goody bags at the Celebration of Excellence. The ambassadors strive to be leaders, make a difference in the community, and help the Edmond Public Schools improve and be the best that they can be!
