october updates

Thanks for sticking with me through my inconsistent emailer updates!

Tbh, I totally forgot I had an email newsletter for a while there LOL. Lately I've just been kinda floating through life on autopilot, disillusioned with the daily grind, unmotivated to set new goals for my art...
I got to do more teen art workshops with Burnaby Public Library this summer and fall.

The next one coming up is a spooky Halloween inking workshop.

But I'm told that the most popular workshop by far is still manga drawing 😂
It's rewarding to see the relationships I've built with local libraries. I now do about 2-4 workshops with BPL every year, and I've also been able to do art workshops with Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Surrey public libraries because of my relationship with them - either by referral or because these librarians found me through the BPL events.

I just really love libraries!! And it's a great feeling to be able to bring my art classes to teens through these publicly accessible free programs.
My first art workshop for adults! These are some of the participants at the acrylic painting workshop I did at Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival.

updates on various projects

Comics in Transit

Cloudscape asked me to be an artist for Comics in Transit, and I thought, oh, it's just one page - this will be a fun little project to do between work!

The experience was a lot more intense than I thought it would be. I ended up having to do some processing on my feelings about racism, and a lot more historical research than I thought I would. I took on the project in January, and it is now in October that my piece is completed and up for display!

Just goes to show that comics -always- takes longer than you think it will... and also, when I now look back on the finished page, I'm like, why did all this feel so hard? It looks so simple, now that it's completed.

cw: anti-Asian racism, rioting

Jean Kindratsky coordinated Comics in Transit this year, Heritage Vancouver conducted the interviews, and my comic was based off an interview with Project 1907 on the topic of Anti-Asian racism.

You can also check out the 6 other comics this year, on display at Granville Island until Nov 7th.

Again, each one-page comic looks deceptively simple, but I'm sure each piece required a ton of thought, as they all tackle serious and reflective topics, like mental health and isolation, Indigenous community, and homelessness. I have a huge amount of respect for all the other artists who worked on these comics!

My dragon art is on the debut album cover of local musician, Sad China! They are suuuper talented and just one of those people who's always reaching out and doing things in the local arts community.

Please give their album a listen, it's got beautiful Chinese diaspora feels and dreamy aesthetics and a really unique electronic pop sound.

Rabbit Physician

I'm still working on my graphic novel, still trying to get it ready to query!

It is a very slow process... I'm stuck in edit hell and I keep changing things around. I can tell that I'm probably being pickier than I need to be, but I just really want to do something that isn't rushed, that I can really stand behind and be proud of.

This is kinda where I'm at with everything:

I had made 4 pages as a style test, but I've re-written that scene, so it needs to be re-done. Ah, comics... 💀
