Spring is finally arriving at the Refuge but there is still lots of snow on the ground which we think is a good thing.  All that snow provides water for our pastures and wells for the coming year.  We know everyone would love to come out and visit the donkeys but it just isn't safe until the roads and walkways are cleared of the ice and snow.

Please check our upcoming Calender of Events for 2016 ‚Äčbelow ‚Äčand make your plans to come out and meet all the new donkey arrival‚Äčs‚Äč from December 2015‚Äč along with your old-time favourite long eared friends.‚Äč
Herd Health: All About Hoofs
This winter we definitely saw our share of common health issues and now we head into the season of hoof abscesses.  An abscess is a piece of dirt that has entered the bottom of the hoof and becomes infected.  The hoof swells which is very painful for the donkeys and at times they cannot walk at all.  There is a procedure that is followed which helps find the infected spot and release the infection which brings immediate relief from the ‚Äčpain for the donkey.

We always provide pain medicine to the donkey to keep them comfortable and usually within a week everything is back to normal.  For some reason donkeys are much more prone to an abscess in their hoof than a horse.   Our valuable team of care givers do an excellent job trying to mitigate the conditions that cause the abscess in the first place but unfortunately most of these donkeys arrive with compromised hoof health which makes them vulnerable to chronic hoof problems.

Hoof health is just as important in animals as it is in people, and here at the Refuge, we believe in the Five Freedoms.  Learn more about the Freedoms, and enter our colouring contest below.
The Refuge as the snow begins to melt this spring.  The Mammoths chill out in their paddock; when all the snow melts the paddocks will be deep cleaned.

As a Charity which relies on Donations to rescue donkeys and provide them with a safe home we are concerned about our upcoming budget and these very challenging economic times.  We are wondering if you could please remember the donkeys and their needs by becoming a Bray-ve Heart Donor.  A small monthly scheduled donation makes such a difference in how we budget for the donkeys care as well as  plan for their future.  $5.00. $10.00 or even $20.00 a month soon adds up to help ensure that we always have the funds to pay for Hay, the Veterinary bill or something as basic as the monthly utilities.
You are able to visit our Canada Helps Donkey Refuge Donor page at
and follow the prompts to set up a Monthly Donation.  You will receive your Tax Receipts through Canada Helps and will be helping the donkeys in the area that you choose.  We wish we didn't have to always be asking for help but there is no other way to have the funds needed to do the work required to save donkeys in need.

Thank you to all Our Donors and Future Donors that are making such a difference in the lives of these donkeys.

Can't make a monthly commitment right now?  We understand.  You can always give any amount that's comfortable for you at the moment.  We also now offer donations of set amounts through the online shop as an add on to your order.  You can add $5, $10, $15 or $25 to your shop purchase as a receipted donation.  Also just a heads up: we are down to our last 15 Calendars for 2016, and they're on sale!   Last chance to have all the monthly cuteness (unless you win our adult colouring contest)!
