This winter we definitely saw our share of common health issues and now we head into the season of hoof abscesses. An abscess is a piece of dirt that has entered the bottom of the hoof and becomes infected. The hoof swells which is very painful for the donkeys and at times they cannot walk at all. There is a procedure that is followed which helps find the infected spot and release the infection which brings immediate relief from the pain for the donkey.
We always provide pain medicine to the donkey to keep them comfortable and usually within a week everything is back to normal. For some reason donkeys are much more prone to an abscess in their hoof than a horse. Our valuable team of care givers do an excellent job trying to mitigate the conditions that cause the abscess in the first place but unfortunately most of these donkeys arrive with compromised hoof health which makes them vulnerable to chronic hoof problems.
Hoof health is just as important in animals as it is in people, and here at the Refuge, we believe in the Five Freedoms. Learn more about the Freedoms, and enter our colouring contest below.
