  Spring is just around the corner

Dear Cooking & Eating Friends:

Spring is just around the corner here on the island, and we’ve been blessed with a mild winter. Although mildness doesn’t always bode well for agriculture, the onset of March light has inspired me to start the flower and veggie seedlings for Rabbit Hill.
Thinking about starting some seeds yourself? Think onions! The most widely used vegetable in all cuisines, onions sets are easy to do and can be started right now. Check out Jean English’s excellent primer Start Onions From Seed in February-March on growing onions.  The best part is, green! A box of onions on a sunny windowsill yields tasty clippings to use in salads, soups and sandwiches.
 
March brings exciting happenings here on Deer Isle.

On Monday, March 9, Heron Breen of Fedco Seeds will be making a seed presentation on "The Process by which Heirloom Seed Revival & Preservation is Pursued" at 6:00 p.m. at the Deer Isle Library. Following his remarks there will be seed swap. Bring those extra seeds and swap with others!
Do you belong to an organization that cooks for large groups? Do you like cooking for a crowd? If so, please learn more about how to cook food safely for large groups by attending the Cooking for a Crowd Workshop on March 12.
And for those men who like to cook (and the rest of us who like to eat!)  Healthy Island Project invites you to attend Men Who Cook. Join us for a memorable evening of music, good food, and community. Plus, all proceeds benefit a new scholarship at the high school!
Soon the tulips will be in bloom, the cove filled with Canada geese honking  to protect their nests, and the regal ospreys will return.

Spring is in air and mud season almost here. Please join us as we celebrate the gifts of our island.
