As we enter into the next phase of recovering from the pandemic, we have a number of awareness-raising events we wanted to share with you.

At the top of the list, we have National Carers Week just around the corner, 7th - 13th June. We have lots planned which will come to you in a special bulletin this week, but in the meantime, please save the date for Sutton Carers Forum on Tuesday, 8th June 12 - 2pm - information below.

Volunteers' Week is the first week of June and we will be supporting this as well, especially given the amazing people, of all ages, who have given so much to support Carers this year.

Another set of events, also very close to our heart, were held in Mental Health Awareness Week for which we made a really personal video. It only takes a few minutes to watch and is well worth it - we challenge you not to feel a sense of calm by the end!

But coming up this week is
Dementia Action Week! Please scroll down to discover more about this series of events including the upcoming Dementia Action Week Forum and special quiz.
Don't forget to join us at the Dementia Action Week Forum this Thursday!

Please see below for the full programme of events taking place this week, from push-ups, to singing, to coffee with the Mayor. Don't forget to take part in the Dementia Action Week Quiz: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/DAWQuiz21. The quiz closes Friday 21st May at 9am. Thank you to Ivona, our new Adult Carers Support Service Manager, for her energy leading on this.

It's time to say thank you!

Volunteers' Week (1st - 7th June) is an opportunity to recognise the contribution volunteers make to our communities and a time to say thank you for everything that they do. Our partners at Volunteer Centre Sutton are hosting an array of events throughout the week to give thanks to those who volunteer in Sutton, raise awareness of the impact they have made and promote the volunteering opportunities available.

If you are out and about in Sutton that week, then please keep an eye on the screen outside the Sound Lounge, where we will be featured, alongside other local partners, as part of a 'thank you showreel', sharing our thanks and appreciation for our volunteers.

Please see below the outline of events for that week. If you would like to find out more about Volunteer Centre Sutton, then please click
here. If you need further support and information, then please email Jo Dawson at jodawson@vcsutton.org.uk.

Carers Week 2021 - events & how to get involved

With just three weeks to go until Carers Week begins, we want to hear what you may be doing! We will be sending out a special Carers Week bulletin this week, but in the meantime, please do get in touch - to send us your events by the 28th May, or even right up until the day!

Carers Week is an annual campaign that raises awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges that unpaid Carers face and recognising the contributions made by Carers to their families and communities. It is also a time to help those who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as Carers and obtain the support that they need.

To contact us about getting involved, or to inform us about your event, please email communications@suttoncarerscentre.org, or call us on 020 8296 5611. It can be a celebration, an awareness-raising event, or perhaps even a fundraiser for Carers.

One event being run by Carers, with our support, is the Sutton Carers Forum, where we will holding a follow-on discussion from Dementia Action Week as well as coming together to pledge what we will be doing to make Carers visible and valued in the coming year, led by the Leader of the Council. Please do join us of you can!

A look back on Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week (10th - 16th May) is an annual event started by The Mental Health Foundation 21 years ago that focuses on achieving good mental health. The theme for this year is 'Connect With Nature', chosen due to nature being seen as a way of protecting our wellbeing and having a positive effect on our mental health - and it has been highlighted as one of the most popular ways to sustain good mental health during the pandemic.

Please visit the Mental Health Foundation's
website for tips, podcasts and videos on how to support and maintain good mental health.

Here at Sutton Carers Centre, we created a special 'Carers’ Corner' episode where some of our staff, old and new, share with you the small actions they take to look after their mental health whilst connecting with nature.

Watch it below, or please click the link to view it on our YouTube channel
here.
#InAGoodPlace - Dying Matters Awareness Week

Dying Matters, the annual campaign led by Hospice UK took place last week (10th - 16th May). The purpose of this event is to promote awareness and support people to talk openly about death, dying and bereavement, whilst ensuring that the right plans are put in place for ourselves and those around us.

This year, the focus was on the importance of being in a good place to die. There is no right or wrong place to die; it will be different for everyone but the pandemic has proven that it is more important than ever for families to think about it, talk about it and to plan for it.

You can find out more about Dying Matters by visiting their website here.

This year, Caroline Hardwicke, someone who has worked with us for several years, became a specialist Carers worker within the new Sutton Palliative Care Coordination Hub - a team that provides support to patients, families and Carers during the last stages of life. To find out more information on how we can better support you if the person you care for has a life-limiting illness, please email Caroline at caroline@suttoncarerscentre.org, call the Hub directly on: 020 8296 4112, or alternatively, you can speak to your GP to be referred.
