We hope that you all managed to enjoy the beautiful weather over the long Easter weekend - whether you went for a walk in the woodlands or sat in the sunshine with a lovely cuppa! May this May Bank Holiday weekend also bring you some sunshine or at least a bit of time out from your caring roles.

We just wanted to check in with you all as we start a new month and share with you the latest updates, including our May support groups, partner events and fundraising opportunities.

With the May bank holiday on the horizon, we are sharing with you a list of services available over the long weekend to support the wellbeing and mental health of both you and the person/people you care for. Please scroll down for further details.

We hope that you all caught the Papa John's Trophy Final on the 3rd of April. We are so proud of our home team, Sutton United. Even though they may not have won, they still made history that day. Thank you once again to Steve and Sam at Free Kicks Foundation for donating the 10 'Club Wembley' tickets for our Young Carers and their families and more tickets since. It was certainly a day that they will never forget!

Centre Updates
Staff Training Day - 27th May

Please note that the Centre will be closed to personal callers and phone calls all day on Friday 27th May for staff training purposes. We will be open as normal on Monday, 30th May, 10am - 5pm (which is not a Bank Holiday due to the Queen's Jubilee - which also means that we will be closed for the Bank Holidays now on Thursday 2nd June and Friday 3rd June, instead).
Form-filling Appointments

We seem to have had a surge of people needing help with benefit forms. If you need our urgent assistance, then please call us ASAP on 020 8296 5611. If your form is not urgent but you still require our help, then please call us and we will sort out a solution for you. We are currently booking appointments 3 weeks in advance. If you are coming in for an appointment, then please do ensure that have your paperwork gathered and ready for us to review with you, as that helps us help you best.

An egg-stra special Easter thanks to the Sutton Masons!

For a second year running, Nigel Feltham and the Sutton Masons kindly donated Easter Eggs to our Young Carers and their families. We would like to thank them for their continued support - as a gesture like this certainly made it an Easter to remember!

The Countdown to Carers Week 2022
Make caring visible, valued and supported

With just over a month to go until Carers Week (6th - 12th June), we are busy finalising a full calendar of events for Sutton.

To give you a little teaser, with London Brough of Sutton, we will be having a public display of Carers' art and other creative items; a wellbeing 'open day' here in the Centre with our health colleagues, and partners such as South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust will be running online wellbeing sessions for Carers including staff Carers, specialist Recovery College Courses, and a picnic in the park for Carers. Can't wait to hear more about Sutton Parent Carers Lunch, too!

We'd love to hear from you, our local carer partners, and organisations who support carers. What are you planning to do this Carers Week? Perhaps you could run a staff networking event for employees who juggle their paid jobs alongside their caring roles to make them aware of the support available to them - or even run a training course for staff to help them better understand and identify unpaid Carers in their everyday roles. Perhaps a coffee morning to thank carers you already know would be a nice gesture? We would love to hear from Carers with ideas, too.

Please let us know your plans by emailing chiara@suttoncarerscentre.org. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Please visit the Carers Week webpage here for more information and resources.

Centre Activities
What's going on in May at SCC?

Please find below an outline of the free Support Groups running at SCC for Adult Carers during May 2022.

We are excited to announce that we have a new group starting for Parent Carers of older teenagers and young adults with extra needs. The group will meet at the Centre monthly on the first Wednesday of each month, 10am - 11:30am. The first group will take place on Wednesday 4th May.  If you are not able to make a Wednesday morning, then please remember that we are still running a monthly evening online support group for Parent Carers on the second Tuesday of each month, 6:30pm - 7:30pm. The next group will take place Tuesday 10th May. For more details on these groups and to book your place, please email corinne@suttoncarerscentre.org.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of people attending, as well as our staff and volunteers who facilitate the groups, we continue to follow COVID-19 prevention measures. If you can, please take an LFT before you attend and follow all guidelines to reduce the chances of you passing on or getting the virus. If you have any symptoms of being unwell, please do stay home to get better. Please note, that we can supply you with a box of Lateral Flow Tests when visiting the Centre to best protect you and those you care for.

Please visit our website: https://www.suttoncarerscentre.org/support-groups for our weekly schedule of support groups, including our Young and Young Adult Carer groups.

As always, you also can call us on 020 8296 5611 or email enquiries@suttoncarerscentre.org or youngcarers@suttoncarerscentre.org.

For more information on one-off virtual groups and activities, training and workshops at Sutton Carers Centre, as well as confidential, 1-1 support available to Carers of all ages, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We also hold information about Carer peer support groups run virtually by partner organisations such as
Sutton Parent Carers Forum, the National Autistic Society and more.
Your Wellbeing
If you and your family become unwell over the Bank Holiday weekend

With the Bank Holiday weekend upon us, we wanted to share with you information on some of the services available over this time.

If you or the person you care for requires urgent help from a GP over the bank holiday weekend but it is not an emergency, then please call  0333 332 6570 (8am - 4pm). Alternatively, you can visit NHS 111 online or call 111. In the event of an emergency, please always call 999.

Your local pharmacy offers healthcare services which you don't need to book an appointment for - just pop in. To find out if your pharmacy is open this Bank Holiday, please click here.

If you need urgent mental health support over the Bank Holiday, then please call the South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Line on 0800 028 8000. Please click here for more information.

For caring concerns, including safeguarding an adult or child, please contact London Borough of Sutton on 020 8770 5000, 24 hours a day if urgent. Again, for emergencies, please call 999.

How to access your COVID-19 vaccinations and COVID-19 booster

You can book your 1st, 2nd or 3rd or booster online via the NHS website here. Please note that the 3rd dose for people with a severely weakened immune system is different to a booster dose; if you've had a 3rd dose, you'll be eligible for a booster (4th jab) from 3 months (91 days) after your 3rd dose.

If you have yet to receive your spring booster and are 75 or over you can walk in to a local site. Find the latest walk-in times here.

Please note that it is best to book an appointment in advance for your first, second or third booster vaccinations at the St Nicholas Shopping Centre, Sutton. Some walk-in appointments are available, too. Further information can be found on the South West London Clinical Commissioning Group website here.

If anything is getting in the way of you getting your jabs, such as finding covering care or arranging transport, then please let us know so that we can support you.
Call for evidence for a new 10-year plan to improve mental health

A call for evidence was opened on the 12th of April by the Department of Health & Social Care to inform a new 10-year mental health plan to 'level up' mental health across the country and put mental and physical health on an equal footing.

They are asking for people of all ages with lived experience of mental health conditions as well as Mental Health Carers to respond to a 12-week call for evidence. You can take part in the survey by clicking here. Please note that it closes at 11:45pm on 5 July 2022.

We would love to hear what you have to say, too, to inform services locally, so please feel free to share your response with us, which, with your permission, we also can share with Carers Trust nationally.

To find out more information about this survey, then please click here.
