This Sunday's Liturgy
In the Extraordinary Form, this Sunday is termed the "Sunday after Ascension." Proper prayers of the Mass may be downloaded here. This puts us in the midst of the "Pentecost novena," the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost. The glory of the Lord's Ascension into heaven is still a fresh memory, but on the other hand, the Holy Spirit has not yet come down upon the apostles, who for the time being are deprived of the presence of the Lord. So, the texts of the liturgy bring us a mixture of exultant joy and wistful longing. The tension is resolved through our hope in the life-giving words of the Lord himself, who promises not to leave us orphans, but through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit to be with us and to strengthen us to fulfill our vocation in this world.
As always, this Saturday's Mass is a Sung Mass with Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony, and it fulfills the Sunday obligation.
